Disability Support Assistant (Classroom-based)

Summary
If you're a patient, caring and resilient individual with a background in health, care or social support, this is your opportunity to bring those valuable skills into the classroom. A specialist school in Blackburn is looking for a compassionate Disability Support Assistant to work with pupils who have Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), Autism and non-verbal communication needs.

This long-term role is classroom-based and offers the chance to make a daily impact, supporting children to access their learning and thrive in a safe, nurturing environment.

The Role
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with complex learning needs including PMLD, ASD and sensory impairments.
- Work closely with teachers, therapists and other professionals to deliver highly personalised support plans.
- Promote communication, independence and engagement through structured routines and sensory-based activities.
- Support personal care routines with dignity and sensitivity.
- Use and develop your non-verbal communication skills, including basic Makaton or AAC systems (training available).
- Monitor pupil wellbeing and respond with calm, consistent support during challenging moments.
- Foster an inclusive and respectful classroom environment where all pupils are supported to succeed.

The Ideal Person & Skills/Education Needed
- Experience supporting individuals with complex physical, medical or learning needs - either in care, residential, health, or special education settings.
- A calm, caring nature with strong emotional resilience.
- Great communication skills with the ability to adapt to a wide range of needs and behaviours.
- A collaborative team player who can also work independently when required.
- A relevant qualification in care, health, social care or a related field is required.
- A genuine desire to help pupils overcome barriers and enjoy a positive school experience.

The School
The school provides tailored education and support for pupils with severe and complex needs. Staff work as a multidisciplinary team to ensure each child is given the opportunity to develop emotionally, socially and academically in a safe and stimulating environment. It is a place where compassion meets structure and every achievement is celebrated.

Hours
Monday to Friday, 8.30 am - 3.30 pm. Both full-time and part-time applications are welcome.

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
