Summary
Clinical: 1.1 Maintain a high standard of midwifery care based on evidence based practice 1.2 Promote infant feeding throughout pregnancy and help with infant feeding, as determined by women / birthing peoples informed choice. 1.3 Keep up to date with changes and developments in midwifery care and participate in any research projects applicable to the maternity unit. 1.4 Be confident and competent in all areas of midwifery, therefore able to carry out total midwifery care during the whole period of admission. 1.5 Participate in review of clinical practice. 1.6 Maintain statutory records any other records that are required locally, including maternity computer systems, e.g. iCare. 1.7 Can demonstrate competence in perineal repair & cannulation. 1.8 Complete mandatory training, including four x CTG workshops annually. 1.9 Give clinical guidance to other colleagues as required. 1.10 Act as a Mentor to student midwives and maintain Live sign -off status. 1.11 Plan, organise and participate in Parent Education teaching in the department. Professional: 2.1 Maintain NMC registration and ensure that the Notification of Intention to Practice is submitted annually. 2.2 Revalidate with NMC every three years, by providing appropriate evidence to their confirmer as requested. 2.3 Practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and the Midwives Rules. Ensure that other NMC documents/standards and Trust guidelines are adhered to. Maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence in accordance with NMC recommendations. Band 6 Bank Midwife JD, Mar 2016 Page 3 of 10 2.4 Plan and provide individualised care based on careful history taking, medical and social assessment as early in pregnancy as possible. 2.5 To promote and maintain standards of professional practice in order to enhance quality of care for clients. 2.6 Work within the agreed guidelines, policies and practices and participate in the review of guidelines and practice. 2.7 Be accountable for maintaining a safe and responsible approach to own sphere of practice. Ensure good communication with appropriate team professionals/ agencies/clients using discretion and maintaining confidentiality and a level of continuity and quality of care. 2.8 Always maintain legible and contemporary records, reflecting the management of care. 2.9 Communicate information effectively with clients to assist them in making informed choice regarding maternity care. 2.10 Be aware of the Data Protection Act, Information Governance and confidentiality rules. 2.11 Work towards the aims and objectives of the Trusts Nursing and Midwifery Strategy. 2.12 Always maintain the Trust values. 2.13 Safeguarding children: maintain knowledge of recognition of safeguarding concerns. When appropriate initiate the referral to social services. Liaise closely with social services and other team members. 2.14 Attend an annual review as recommended by the NMC. Liaise with the PMA for professional issues, which affect the safety of the mother/birthing person and baby. Managerial: 3.1 Participate in the multidisciplinary approach to individualised care. Encourage effective communication with medical, midwifery colleagues and external agencies, particularly labour ward colleagues. 3.2 Have an awareness of the budgetary implications for the Directorate. Maintain a responsible attitude to spending within that budget. Band 6 Bank Midwife JD, Mar 2016 Page 4 of 10 3.3 Follow appropriate procedures and report incidents/accidents with regard to Health and Safety. This job involves contact with blood, tissue and other bodily fluids. Knowledge of how to deal with spillages and the disposal of such fluids is essential. 3.4 Attend relevant mandatory in-service training including CTG, obstetric emergencies, child protection, Health and Safety training updates on an annual basis in accordance with national recommendations and Trust guidelines. 3.5 Report sick leave in accordance with the Directorate guidelines. 3.6 Maintain effective communication links with Senior Management Team and participate in Individual Performance Reviews. 3.7 To have knowledge of the risk management strategy for the maternity unit and to ensure that risk trigger events are reported appropriately using the IT system. 3.8 To assist the Lead midwife (Band 7) in the day to day management of the area and act up to the post as required. 3.9 To provide support for newly appointed or rotational midwives. 4.0 Report complaints, incidents and accidents to the Team Leader and assist in their investigation and resolution. 4.1 Attend relevant ward, team and departmental meetings as required. Personal: 4.1 Support colleagues in developing a progressive and safe working environment. 4.2 Encourage an open attitude in working relationships with colleagues and clients. 4.3 To continue with own professional development and extend clinical and managerial skills. 4.4 Be aware of the grievances, bullying and harassment and complaints procedure.
