Summary

Role: Head of Department — Modern Foreign Languages (Maternity Cover)

Area: Gosport
Contract: Full-time, starting January (Fixed-Term maternity cover) with potential to convert to permanent
Salary / Day Rate: Dependent on experience
Specialism: Ideally French and Spanish

The successful candidate will lead and further develop the MFL Department, promoting strong outcomes, creativity in teaching, and a global dimension to pupils’ learning. This is an opportunity to drive curriculum innovation, language enrichment (including trips and cultural links) and collaborate across the faculty within a supportive school culture.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the MFL Department: planning, delivering and monitoring high-quality language teaching across French, Spanish

Develop and implement strategies to raise achievement and engagement in languages

Support, lead and mentor staff within the department

Enhance the international dimension of the curriculum and promote language uptake and enrichment across the school


Ensure assessment, reporting and tracking of student progress are effective and aligned with school expectations

Collaborate with senior leadership to support whole-school initiatives and professional development

Person Specification / Requirements:

Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) – essential

Proven experience teaching MFL, ideally with French and Spanish specialism

Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire staff and students

Confident in curriculum development and raising standards of teaching and learning

Enthusiastic about promoting languages and culture, with a global outlook

Resilient, reflective and committed to student success and staff development

Able to manage and communicate effectively, and promote teamwork
