Summary

This is a unique opportunity for a technical candidate, with a background in, or substantial knowledge of , air quality and it's regulation including an understanding of the Environment Agency permitting and enforcement process, to best support this work.

You will be expected to apply your technical and regulatory knowledge of air quality issues to the full range of industrial sectors regulated by the Environment Agency in supporting our work to reduce air pollution from permitted sites.

You will work across the business to support area teams, National Permitting Service, and Environment & Business colleagues to:

- Support project management and delivery in improving the capture of data and evidence, used to regulate more effectively.
This supports Net Zero implementation, through the development of Environmental Assessment Levels for carbon capture and storage amines.

- Input to planning documents, building relationships with our Nature & Place colleagues to effectively offer planning feedback.
This is vital to the growth imperative, through input to the planning process and helping address inconsistencies between the planning and permitting process of air quality issues.

- Develop documents on individual pollutants, supporting work on decreasing emissions.
This is directly linked to Air Quality Scorecard Delivery and Plan to Green, through review, analysis and reporting on the Pollution Inventory data.

We expect air quality work within the team to continue expanding, given the focus within EA2030 for healthy air, land and water.
This post will continue until the end of March 2026, with the potential for extension.

The team

You will be part of the National Air Quality Team, which sits within the Monitoring and Assessment (M&A) team, part of the Chief Regulator’s Group and of the national Environment & Business Directorate.

Experience/skills required

You will have a good understanding of:

- Environment Agency permitting under Environmental Permitting Regulations.

- The use of appropriate measures and best available techniques.

- Industrial regulation including knowledge of specific sectors.


It would be advantageous, should you have the following:

- An understanding of the principles of air quality management and abatement.

- An understanding of air quality or air quality monitoring techniques.

- Experience developing or delivering training packages

- An Environment Agency personal authorisation (warrant)

- UK driving licence

- Membership of a relevant professional body
