Summary
Would you like to come and work in a small and friendly paediatric unit looking after children from our local area? This is a fixed term contract until February 2026.
We have 16 beds and have dedicated day surgery lists. We are looking for experienced and newly qualified staff nurses to come and join our team. You would be supported by a team of band 6’s, aclinical educator, and ward sisters to aid your development. We also have a clinical educator in post to help with staffdevelopmentand we openly encourage change and innovation.
We offer study to all staff including Thames Valley and Wessex High Dependency passport days, retrieval study days, oncology study days. Staff are encouraged toparticipatein band 5 study days held at the John Radcliffe as we are part of the CHOX
The children’s ward at the Horton General Hospital looks after a variety of specialities from medicine to surgery. We care for children for 0 days up to 18 years of age. Every day is different, and we strive to offer the best quality family centre care we can. Thewardis part of the Children’s Hospital Oxford.
Youwouldhave an opportunity to become a link nurse if you have a speciality you are interestedinand we also run a shared decision council that you would have an opportunity toparticipatein.

You will be expected to look afteran allocatedgroup of children and the families offering a high standard of care. This could include day surgery as well as medical and trauma inpatients alongside any medical day care. We also have day ward attenders which can range from consultant reviews toIV antibioticadministration.
We have access toSD'sat the John Radcliffeand alsoas part of the Thames Valley and Wessex network. We encourage staff development within theteamand we also strive to have teamSD'sto ensure all staff are kept updated alongside any mandatory training. If you are newlyqualifiedyou would be part of the foundation programme that is run.
You will be expected to do nights shifts as well as weekends and bank holiday as weoperatea 24/7 ward.
The children's ward is small but friendly and we are always striving to deliver the highest care possible whilst caring for not only the child but family as well.
We always look at any feedback and act upon what we can when we receive negative comments which are few.

Provide exceptional patient care which is underpinned by the best evidence based practice and OUH values.
Work in partnership with the patients’ family and friends, and to be actively involved in the caring process on behalf of the patient where agreed.
Manage, direct and evaluate the nursing care for a defined caseload of patients.
Communicate effectively with patients/relatives/carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
Maintain and develop high standards of nursing care, reflecting the professional nursing practice and patient care commensurate with The Oxford Model for Exemplary Professional Nursing and Midwifery Practice.
Maintain and develop general and specialist knowledge of nursing practice relevant to the clinical area.
Conduct oneself in a professional manner and be a role model to others at all times commensurate with The Code (NMC 2015).
Develop skills to provide senior nurse cover for the department in the absence of the Sister or Charge Nurse or their deputy.
Work proactively to ensure every hospital visit meets the needs of the patient and that patients are discharged in a timely manner ensuring effective communication with the family and or relevant agencies as planned and agreed.
