Summary

As the Cyber Directorate, our mission is to protect public services and the wider government from cyber threats, and set strategic direction for government and the public sector on cyber security. This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in UK national security by ensuring that core-government functions are resilient to cyber attack, thereby strengthening the UK as a sovereign nation and delivering the government’s vision for modern digital government.

In this role, you will be working in the Policy & Supply Chain Team where you will help to shape and drive forward projects that ensure that central government and the wider public sector are cyber secure and digitally resilient. You will set priorities that will shape the future of governmental functions and integrate the transformative outcomes of the GCSS into wider departmental objectives, unlocking opportunities for successful delivery.

If you are passionate about making a real impact and motivated to contribute to creating a safer environment for the UK, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of digital resilience and cyber security across the public sector.

In June 2025, it was announced that the Government Cyber Directorate will move from the Cabinet Office to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) as a part of a machinery of government change. This change aims to bring together the digital transformation of public services into one central department, presenting exciting opportunities and positioning DSIT to lead the government’s digital agenda.

This role is in scope to formally transfer to DSIT when the machinery of government change takes place. If your start date is on the transfer date, when this is confirmed, you will be appointed directly to DSIT and your appointment will be unaffected by the machinery of government change.

This is a unique opportunity to directly shape and develop cyber security policy for the whole of government. In this role you will be delivering on a key ministerial priority for the UK to continue to be a leading cyber power that is able to protect its interests in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The policy and guidance products you develop will have a real impact on increasing the cyber resilience of HMG, including in areas such as supply chain, commercial security and incident management. You may also have the opportunity to work on other big picture issues like the threats and opportunities posed by Artificial Intelligence, quantum cryptography, and the increasing commercial availability of offensive cyber tools.

The Policy & Supply Chain team plays a critical role in ensuring government has the right policies and guidance in place to drive organisational resilience, as well as enhancing cross-government collaboration and identifying shared capabilities to deliver on the objectives in the Government Cyber Security Strategy. You will be joining a growing directorate and team, and will report to a Manchester-based SEO and Grade 7, who will work directly with you.

The Government Cyber Unit functions as a convenor and co-ordinator for cyber security and resilience across the whole of the UK government, and the Policy & Supply Chain Team is no different. You will work with a wide variety of stakeholders - including central government departments, Arms Length Bodies (ALBs), the National Cyber Security Centre (a part of GCHQ), the Devolved Administrations, as well as industry and overseas partners - where you will have a unique opportunity to gain insight to a broad range of national security work across government.

As an HEO Cyber Policy Advisor you will:

  • Work closely with stakeholders to drive policy work, conduct research, identify opportunities for join-up, and build consensus.
  • Use insights from engagement, government assurance processes and other intelligence to help develop and maintain a programme of policy work that addresses some of the government's most pressing cyber security challenges.
  • Work on policy issues like supply chain security and incident management, where you will be required to engage with a wide stakeholder community, including through developing and leading working groups.
  • Have the opportunity to provide briefings to senior officials on strategic policy issues, alongside more reactive policy responses as they arise.

You may also be required to provide additional capacity for wider teams within the Cyber Directorate on things like incident management and assurance activities on an-hoc basis.

The Policy & Supply Chain Team is a hybrid team based across multiple locations. We are committed to creating a collaborative, inclusive team, so this post will require occasional travel to other GDS locations so that we can work together face-to-face.
