Summary
1. Role Overview
-The Design Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the multi-disciplinary design function across HV and BESS major projects. This role ensures the integration, quality, and delivery of all engineering outputs, aligning with project timelines, regulatory standards, and client expectations. The manager acts as the technical authority and design integrator, coordinating across internal teams, external consultants, and construction partners.
2.Key Responsibilities
-Design Leadership
-Lead and coordinate the design development across HV and BESS systems.
-Ensure design compliance with national grid codes, DNO requirements, and safety regulations.
-Oversee the integration of electrical, civil/structural, and control systems designs.
-Team Management
-Line manages three discipline leads, providing technical guidance, performance management, and professional development.
-Foster a collaborative, high-performance design culture across the team.
-Project Delivery
-Own the design programme and ensure alignment with overall project milestones.
-Manage design risks, change control, and interface resolution.
-Support procurement and construction teams with technical input and design clarifications.
-Stakeholder Engagement
-Act as the primary design point of contact for clients, consultants, and internal project teams.
-Represent the design function in project reviews, HAZOPs, and design assurance meetings.
-Quality & Compliance
-Ensure all designs meet internal quality standards and external regulatory requirements.
-Lead design reviews, technical audits, and lessons learned processes.
3. Team Structure & Interfaces
Direct Reports:
-Lead Electrical Engineer - HV systems, protection, and grid interface.
-Lead Civil/Structural Engineer - Foundations, enclosures, site layout.
-Lead Controls/SCADA Engineer - Automation, telemetry, and system integration.
Interfaces:
-Reports to Head of Design
-Works closely with all stakeholders e.g. Peers, Project Managers, Construction Managers, Procurement, and HSE teams.
-Coordinates with external design consultants and OEMs.
4. Required Competencies
-Chartered Engineer (or working towards) in Electrical, Power Systems, or related discipline.
-Proven experience in HV and/or BESS infrastructure projects.
-Strong leadership and team management skills.
-Excellent understanding of UK grid connection processes and standards.
-Proficient in design tools, BIM coordination, and document control systems.
5. KPIs / Success Metrics
-On-time delivery of design packages.
-Zero non-conformances in design audits.
-Team engagement and development metrics.
-Effective resolution of design-related tasks.
-Positive stakeholder feedback on design leadership.
