The Headteacher and Governing Body of Kitchener Primary School are seeking to appoint an experienced, reliable, and proactive Estates Manager (Caretaker) to join our dedicated team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in the maintenance, safety, and development of our large and vibrant inner-city school.
We are looking for someone who will take pride in our school site and buildings, and who is committed to maintaining a safe, clean, secure, and welcoming environment for pupils, staff, and the community.

We’re Looking for Someone Who:
• Has previous experience in building/site maintenance, caretaking, or premises management
• Understands the importance of safeguarding and health & safety in a school setting
• Can carry out a range of maintenance and repair tasks confidently and competently
• Has strong leadership skills and experience in line managing cleaning staff or similar teams
• Has good organisational skills and can manage contractors and site schedules effectively
• Is flexible, dependable, and able to respond to emergencies
• Can work independently and as part of a team, communicating well with staff and visitors
• Is physically fit and able to undertake a variety of manual tasks
• Can maintain detailed records (e.g. compliance logs, fire safety checks, COSHH)
• Brings initiative, problem-solving skills, and a positive attitude to the role
Key Responsibilities:
• Ensure the site is safe, secure, and well-maintained at all times
• Open and close the school premises daily, ensuring site security
• Carry out routine maintenance, repairs, and compliance checks (e.g. fire alarms, legionella, emergency lighting)
• Oversee and line manage the cleaning team, ensuring high standards of hygiene, performance, and scheduling
• Manage site services and external contractors to ensure health and safety and service standards are met
• Maintain outdoor areas including paths, bins, fences, and playgrounds
• Support the management of cleaning and hygiene standards across the site
• Respond to urgent repairs and emergencies as needed
• Maintain records and report issues to the Headteacher as appropriate
• Liaise with school staff and external services, including Cardiff Council teams
