Summary

Day Surgery & Main Theatre Services

We are excited to share that our Day Surgery Service and Main Theatre Service are now combined into one dynamic team, delivering high-quality care across Basildon and Orsett Hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to be part of a service that is central to our Trust’s surgical provision.

At Basildon Hospital, we have a busy inpatient block comprising 7 theatres, 5 Day Stay Unit theatres, 2 maternity theatres, and an ECT suite, supporting a 24/7 activity profile and covering all surgical specialties except neurology.

Our Day Surgery Service is a truly nurse-led model, with staff leading the way in areas such as pre-assessment and discharge. The service provides care for adults, children, and patients with additional needs, and includes overnight facilities. At Orsett Hospital, the unit operates as a stand-alone day surgery centre, delivering safe and effective care without inpatient facilities.

Patients undergoing surgery in our main theatres are supported within the service, as are those transferred from A&E or other hospital departments. We also provide high-quality pre- and post-operative care for inpatients awaiting transfer to a ward when needed.

This is an exciting time to join a forward-thinking service that champions nurse-led practice, multidisciplinary teamwork, and the delivery of safe, compassionate, and patient-focused care.

Work as part of theatre team to scrub and circulate for surgical procedures.

Develop and maintain excellent theatre organisational skills.

Take part in rotation through all areas of the departments and across both sites to meet the needs of the service on a 24 hour basis.

Work within the multidisciplinary team ensuring good professional relationships.

Work competently in a variety of specialities for both paediatric and adult patients

Practice in accordance with the NMC / HCPC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies and procedures, and within your scope of practice.

Be an effective team member

Promote interdisciplinary working, with outcomes aimed at the best interests of patients and cohesive service delivery

Train junior staff and take part in the orientation of new staff following appropriate training.

Participate in clinical supervision/appraisals/audits

Take every opportunity to sustain and improve own knowledge and professional competence, reporting to senior staff any deficits that impinge on practice in a timely fashion whilst meeting the needs of the service

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
