Summary
We are seeking to appoint two Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioners (tACPs) to join our Emergency Department team at Walsall Manor Hospital.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a dynamic and supportive multidisciplinary team, working within the Emergency Department to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. The successful candidates will contribute to direct patient care and support service delivery across all areas of the department, including minors, majors, resus, paediatrics and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), as required.
Trainee ACPs will be supported to enrol onto and successfully complete a Master’s in Advanced Clinical Practice at an approved Higher Education Institution. Training typically takes three years, but in some cases may be extended to five, with progress reviewed through Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP) panels. Supervision and structured support will be provided throughout the programme, including an allocated Senior ACP mentor and a Consultant educational supervisor.
Applicants already enrolled on an MSc pathway will be expected to continue and complete their training within the same timeframe, while working across all relevant areas of Emergency Medicine.
Applications from qualified ACPs are also welcomed, where candidates can evidence achievement of the final-year ARCP competencies as required by Walsall.
As a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) in the Emergency Department, you will contribute to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of patients with varied presentations, under supervision from Senior ACPs, Registrars, and Consultants.
You will rotate through minors, majors, resus, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Paediatric Emergency Medicine, developing your clinical skills in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment.
Key responsibilities include:
• Delivering safe, effective, person-centred care
• Performing advanced clinical assessments under supervision
• Taking increasing responsibility for patient management
• Requesting and interpreting investigations, forming differential diagnoses
• Referring or discharging patients appropriately under supervision
• Supporting patient flow through timely decision-making and planning
• Participating in supervision, reflective practice, and feedback
• Contributing to quality improvement and clinical guideline development
• Staying current with evidence-based practice and engaging in CPD
You will also have protected time for university study as part of your MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme, and be supported in meeting academic and clinical milestones.
Note: Applications from qualified ACPs are welcomed. A Job Description for the qualified ACP role is available upon request.

We are proud to be recognised by our colleagues as a great place to work. A culture built on our core values ofRespect, Compassion, Teamwork and Professionalism. We are committed to investing in our workforce, supporting personal and professional development at every stage of your career.
Does this sound like the kind of organisation you want to be part of? One where a former Band 2 porter completed her Nursing Registration and went to serve in the Senior Nursing Team? Or where a colleague who joined as an Emergency Department Registrar progressed to become an ED Consultant, then Clinical Director, and finally Divisional Director of Medicine?
As the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, our integrated Trust delivers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services from Walsall Manor Hospital, as well as extensive community-based care.
Could you make an impact here as we focus on #BuildingOurFuture?
As part of the clinical team within the Emergency Department, the Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) will work under close supervision to develop the skills and knowledge required to contribute to the assessment, treatment and ongoing care of patients with a wide range of presentations, across all age groups.
The post holder will begin with a clearly defined scope of practice and, with structured support and supervision, will gradually take on broader clinical responsibilities in line with their training progress and experience. This includes gaining exposure to all areas of the department, including minors, majors, resus, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and Paediatric Emergency Medicine.
The training programme is designed to build advanced clinical skills in a safe, supportive environment, with particular emphasis on teamworking, shared decision-making and reflective practice. Core competencies will include history taking, physical assessment, diagnostic reasoning and non-medical prescribing, with regular review through ARCP panels and support from named clinical supervisors.
To support their development, tACPs will also undertake planned rotational placements across a range of relevant services. These will include dedicated time in Medical SDEC, Frail and Elderly Services (FES), Paediatric Emergency Medicine, and the See and Treat area for focused experience in minor injuries and illnesses.
This role includes protected time to complete the academic requirements of the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and develop the capabilities required for progression, as outlined in the NHS England framework.
Qualified ACP applicantswill be expected to practise at an advanced level under the 4 pillars of practice (clinical, leadership, education, research). A full Job Description for the qualified ACP role is available on request.
