Summary
At Musgrove Park Hospital, a General Practitioner joins the Breast Care Centre to support the assessment and diagnosis of patients referred under the adult suspected breast cancer pathway. Working within a multidisciplinary team that includes breast surgeons, radiologists, and nurse practitioners, the GP plays a central role in delivering one-stop clinics and contributing to the national 28-day faster diagnosis standard. These clinics involve triple assessments, where clinical examination, imaging, and biopsy are coordinated to provide rapid and accurate diagnoses. The GP's week is structured around three clinical sessions and one dedicated session for supporting professional activities. These include administrative duties, clinical governance, audit participation, and continuing professional development. The role does not involve on-call or out-of-hours commitments, allowing the practitioner to focus fully on patient care and service improvement. In addition to clinical responsibilities, the GP contributes to weekly multidisciplinary meetings where complex cancer cases are discussed and treatment plans are developed. There is also scope to engage in teaching and supervision of junior staff and medical students, as well as opportunities to develop a specialist interest aligned with the needs of the department. Maintaining full GMC registration and completing mandatory training and annual appraisals are essential aspects of the role. The GP is expected to uphold high standards of clinical documentation and communication, ensuring seamless coordination with primary care and other specialties. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact in breast diagnostics while working in a supportive and innovative environment. The hospital is located in Taunton, Somerset, a region known for its beautiful countryside, cultural amenities, and excellent quality of life.
