Summary
Responsible for co-ordinating and delivering effective, quality nursing care following a patient-centred model of practice and facilitating the allocation of staff in the department to meet clinical demand. Provide clinical expertise and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Supervision and direction of junior Registered Nursing staff, Health Care Assistants and learners. Works within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to local and national protocols / standard operating procedures / policies. To ensure that the environment is clean, safe, tidy and welcoming for patients and visitors. To be able to work flexibly to meet the fluctuating needs of the department as they arise. To act as a role model to other staff members. In the absence of Sister/deputy, regularly assumes responsibility for the area on a day-to-day basis, utilising knowledge of Trust standards, policies and procedures. Contributes to the management of risk in the department by minimising clinical and financial risk. Keeps comprehensive clinical records and adheres to all aspects of information governance and safe record keeping. Maintains clinical competence within their scope of practise and regularly undertake training to facilitate their ongoing professional development. PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Perform comprehensive assessment of patients nursing needs. Plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to patients health care needs. Perform comprehensive assessment of simple and complex wounds and be able to competently apply wide range of dressings and techniques including compression bandaging, Topical Negative Pressure therapy and assisting in simple and complex vascular and plastics clinics. Maintain a safe working environment, ensuring high standards and safe practice are maintained by: Teaching staff to understand and accept their responsibilities e.g. environmental cleanliness, maintenance and use of all equipment within clinical setting. Assist the senior team in the monitoring of incidents, accidents and complaints and participating in corrective action and the monitoring of outcomes. Adhering to the guidelines of the Health & Safety at Work Act. Utilisation of Trust Risk Assessment documentation, to ensure that Health & Safety and Clinical risk are reduced in the department. Management of the area in the absence of a Sister/deputy, including the deployment and supervision of staff. Demonstrating leadership and management skills by overseeing staff and clinics to ensure service efficiency, and working flexibly by adapting to the changing needs of the department as they arise. To ensure that Trust and Directorate Policies and Procedures are carried out correctly by: Compiling off-duty rotas to make effective use of staff. Being responsible for efficient and effective usage of the available resources in the absence of the department Sister. Maintaining training of mandatory and other training competencies as relevant to the role/area. Establish and maintain effective communication channels within and outside the area by: Promoting teamwork and inter-personnel relationships and encouraging others in the decision making process. Assisting in organising and attending regular Ward Meetings and participating in forums as required. Playing an active role in the integration of Patient and Public Involvement. Effecting change in order to meet changing patient need. Engaging with daily safety briefing and overseeing implementation of new strategies within the workplace. COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Reporting and documenting all relevant nursing actions and/or patients needs: Communicates changes, with other health care professionals, of patient condition/ needs as they occur. Provide delicate, sensitive and/or complex information concerning patients condition, which requires persuasion and reassurance skills. Some patients have special needs or learning disabilities. Provide and deliver health education and health promotion Engage, interact and teach carers/families to be actively involved in patients care. To ensure patients and carers/family have the relevant knowledge and skills to continue with care after discharge. Communicates effectively with; Department Manager and department based nursing team Matron Educational staff Infection Control Team Clinical Nurse Specialists Consultants within area of responsibility Patients and their support network Housekeeping team Portering staff All post holders must: Work to the Trust values - Put patients first, Take ownership, Respect others, Be positive, Listen, learn and improve.
