Summary
Mechanical Design Engineer – Robotic Automation | Strood | Full Time, 40 hours per week | Working hours are 08:00–16:30, Monday to Friday | £42,000 – £50,000 DOE
For many years, our client has been providing automation solutions to all sectors of the manufacturing industry, making them a leading UK-based Industrial Robot integrator and Automation Systems supplier.
They are currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Rochester, Kent. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing and manufacturing turnkey automation solutions. This is an office-based position working closely with the internal engineering team.
Are you the right person for the job?
• Proven industry experience in mechanical design engineering
• Mechanical Engineering degree (B.Sc. or higher) and/or years of industry experience
• Strong 3D CAD skills – preferably Autodesk Inventor
• Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes, including CNC milling, welding, fabrication, and assembly
• Knowledge of geometric tolerances and British technical/legislative standards
• Confident with design calculations, risk assessments, and CE/UKCA documentation
• Confident with pneumatic circuit design
• Strong communication and project management skills
• Experience in mentoring junior staff is desirable
• Familiarity with robotic automation and bespoke end-of-arm tooling is beneficial
• Knowledge of 5S, Six Sigma, or Lean principles is a plus
• Proficient in Microsoft Office, with experience in creating Gantt charts
• Able to work both independently and as part of a team
• Willingness to travel for UK-based site surveys and customer meetings
• Experience using ABB’s Robot Studio for simulations and reach tests is a benefit
What will your role look like?
• Mechanical concept and detailed design of robotic automation equipment using 3D modelling on a daily basis
• Carry out design calculations and perform verification tasks
• Liaise with customers and manage design review meetings
• Specify, source and cost bought-in components
• Oversee subcontractors when required and support build/commissioning/testing stages of the projects
• Collaborate with the electrical and control system teams throughout the projects
• Mentor junior engineers and support in-house design improvements
• Attend internal project update meetings and ensure deadlines are met
• Create and manage risk assessments for all stages of a project
• Support CE and UKCA documentation
What can you expect in return?
• Salary from £42,000 to £50,000 depending on experience (negotiable)
• Paid overtime – 1.25x weekdays, 1.5x Saturdays, 2x Sundays
