Summary
Do you enjoy meeting new people and creating memorable experiences for visitors of all ages? Are you passionate about safety, teamwork, and making every journey an enjoyable one?
About us
The National Railway Museum is not only famous for its unrivalled collections but also for its visitor care. The Visitor Experience department is an integral part of our group which demands the highest standards of customer service to maximise the customers' enjoyment of the museum.
Our Visitor Experience department is responsible for running commercial Ticket Desks, Visitor Car Park, Road Train, Flying Scotsman Virtual Reality Experience, Miniature Railway ticket sales and Wonderlab: The Bramall Gallery.
About the role
The Road Train is a key part of the visitor offer at the National Railway Museum, delighting families and tourists alike by offering an exciting form of transport between the museum and York Minster. In this role you will deliver industry leading customer service for the Road Train experience.
You will also be involved in maintenance checks and cleaning of the famous train to ensure it's looking great and running smoothly. With this will be the opportunity to work towards obtaining a PCV licence and driving the Road Train, if interested.
This role is advertised for 14 hours per week working on a fortnightly rota as follows: week 1 - Saturday and Sunday, and week 2 - Thursday and Friday. The salary is £9,172.80 per annum (£12.60 per hour).
About you
We're keen to see applications from motivated candidates with effective customer service skills and the ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently. As the Road Train Guard, you'll work outdoors throughout the year, travelling between the museum and York Minster alongside the driver, maintaining clear communication via radio, and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all passengers.
You'll be skilled in handling cash, following safety procedures, and managing your tasks effectively while representing the museum off-site. Building collaborative working relationships, both with your driver and the wider Visitor Experience Assistant team, will be key, and when there's downtime on the train, you'll support colleagues in other areas of the museum. Above all, we're keen to hear from candidates who are consistent, values-driven, and committed to contributing to an open and inclusive visitor experience.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
