Summary

About us

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has a clear mission - to grow the economy. Our role is to help businesses invest, grow and export to create jobs and opportunities right across the country. We do this in three ways.

Firstly, we help to build a strong, competitive business environment, where consumers are protected and companies rewarded for treating their employees properly.

Secondly, we open international markets and ensure resilient supply chains. This can be through Free Trade Agreements, trade facilitation and multilateral agreements.

Finally, we work in partnership with businesses every day, providing advance, finance and deal-making support to those looking to start up, invest, export and grow.

The Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) directorate develops and operates tools and services to support us in this mission. The team have been nominated four times in a row for ‘Best Public Sector Employer’ at the Women in Tech awards!

About the role

As a Product Manager at DBT, you’ll play a key role in shaping and delivering digital services that make a real difference to businesses and citizens. You’ll champion the discovery, delivery and continuous improvement of products, and define, own and solve complex problems that unlock value for users and the organisation.

You’ll work closely with user researchers to understand user needs, and with stakeholders and service owners to understand business goals. You’ll guide your multidisciplinary team to prototype and implement solutions that are viable, sustainable and grounded in evidence.

You’ll develop a product approach that aligns with other teams across Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) and the wider organisation. You’ll help validate assumptions, share insights and foster a culture of learning, ensuring our products reflect the principles of user-centred design.

In this role you will be supported by Senior and Lead Product Managers to shape your product strategy and grow your craft. Over time, you’ll work across a portfolio of products, managing them through discovery, alpha, beta and live phases.

Main responsibilities

You will:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver digital products and services through all phases of the product lifecycle.
  • Understand the policy context and business drivers behind ideas, and work with your team to test assumptions and identify the best way to deliver user and business value.
  • Create effective, prioritised product roadmaps that meet user needs in a cost-effective and sustainable way.
  • Deliver services that meet the Government Service Standard and reflect the high-quality digital experiences users expect.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data to inform decisions, communicate insights and continuously improve products for diverse user groups.
  • Build and manage strong relationships with stakeholders across DBT and government, creating buy-in and shared ownership of product outcomes.
  • Collaborate with delivery managers to ensure your team is high-performing, well-supported and able to deliver iteratively and effectively.
  • Support and learn from senior product managers and contribute to the development of the wider product community across DDaT.
