Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Teesside University for an ambitious, commercially aware, and entrepreneurial individual to support the University’s mission of transforming lives and economies. This role involves identifying, developing, and enabling market and investment opportunities for our growing portfolio of intellectual property aligned to the Tees Valley Investment Zone.

As a key partner in the Tees Valley Investment Zone, Teesside University is leading the research and innovation workstream, as part of a £160 million, 10-year investment into the digital and creative sectors. We are seeking to enhance our capability, capacity, and performance in commercialisation and IP activities working within the digital and creative sectors.

Key Responsibilities


Commercial Opportunity Development: Play a key role in developing commercial opportunities and growing the entrepreneurial culture at the University and with stakeholders across the Investment Zone.
Pipeline Management: Build a growing pipeline of IP-based commercialisation opportunities through licensing and spinout creation. This will include leading the ‘Proof of Concept’ element of the Investment Zone Research and Innovation programme to explore opportunities.
IP Guidance and Management: Provide IP and IPR guidance, opportunity identification, analysis, due diligence, and portfolio management, working with businesses and stakeholders from across the Investment Zone.
Capability Development: Develop the technology transfer/commercialisation capability, capacity, and culture at the University by providing training materials, delivering programmes, and supporting collaborations.
Collaboration: Work closely with academics, business partnership managers, and industry partners to ensure successful commercialisation of IP-based opportunities.
Strategic Contribution: Contribute to the development and delivery of the University Research and Knowledge Exchange Strategy.

About You:

We are looking for a professional, diligent, and committed individual with experience in an academic environment and the ability to understand academic and technical issues. You will be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline and have significant experience in the commercialisation of IP, including IP protection, IP rights law, IP systems/processes, company formation, and sourcing investment within a digital/creative environment.

Essential Skills and Experience:

Proven knowledge of commercialisation and investment networks, within a digital/creative ecosystem.
A track record of deal completion and the ability to facilitate commercial and research collaborations between organisations and a university.
Excellent networking and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead, negotiate, persuade, and influence others.
Highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to deliver presentations to a wide range of audiences.
Effective planning and project management skills.
Advanced IT skills.
