Summary

Please note this is not a Swansea city council job. You will be working with a private client who received direct payments.

A little about myself:
I am a 7-year-old boy who lives in Swansea. I live at home with my mother and father, and they would like to find some support to help look after me. I have been diagnosed with ASD, and I am nonverbal, so I rely on others who know me well. I communicate by gesturing and leading people to where I want to go.

At home, my favourite things to do are baking, mixing substances to make potions, and spinning on my twirling chair. When I’m out and about, I like visiting McDonald’s. I also enjoy going to Swansea Gymnastics Centre on Saturday mornings. I am usually relaxed about what is expected of me and happy to go with the flow.

Male / female preferred.

Hours of work
4 hours per week during term-time
6 hours per week during half-term holidays

Hours can be worked freely and negotiated with family.

Rate of pay
£13.13

Essential
I need you to:
• When I am out in the community, I may run off if something distracts me and I want to reach it. I am comfortable wearing reins, especially in busy areas, as they help keep me safe;
• I do not have an awareness of danger or road safety. When crossing the road, I depend on my carer to keep me safe by holding my reins, guiding me verbally, and holding my hand;
• I am very interested in food packaging, particularly shiny packaging. If I see something on the floor that catches my eye, I may try to pick it up or run towards it. It is important to be prompt in preventing me from picking things up or running off;
• I need my carer to stay vigilant and keep an eye on me, especially when I am in the park, as I might wander off;
• I have a tendency to eat things found on the floor, so carers need to be aware and help prevent this;
• I am strongly motivated by water and enjoy being near running water, such as rivers or the sea. When I am in the water, it may take a while to encourage me to come out.

Desirable
I’d prefer if:
• I enjoy baking, including chopping, cutting, and mixing. I would like someone to support and guide me during these activities;
• I love mixing different substances and really enjoy messy play. Having support to access these activities is important to me;
• I like spending time in the garden, climbing, and using my trampoline. However, I can climb over the garden wall, so my carer needs to watch carefully to prevent this for my safety;
• I am very independent and often try to do things by myself. For example, if something is out of reach in a shop, I will try to get it on my own instead of asking for help. It’s important that you encourage my independence while also keeping me safe by preventing any risky climbing or unsafe actions.

The support I would like:
• Patience and calmness, especially when I get distracted or want to explore something;
• Constant attentiveness to keep me safe, especially near roads, busy places, and parks;
• Understanding of how I communicate without words and recognising the things that interest me. Using other forms of communication to support me;
• Ability to gently redirect me when I try to pick things up off the floor or wander off;
• Comfort with using safety aids like reins when we are out in busy or potentially unsafe areas;
• Awareness that I am very motivated by water and need to be quick thinking if I attempt to get into the water.

I will need my PA to:
Respect and understand the importance of privacy and confidentiality;
Be confident, mature and have patience;
Be dependable and arrive on time;
Be friendly with an easy-going manner;
Be adaptable and flexible;
Be supportive but not take over;
Have business insurance on your car to take clients out.

Concerning the position

A DBS MUST be processed prior to any commencement of employment. Costs of DBS will be met by Swansea council where applicant is eligible.
