Summary
Support teams and services There is in-house X-ray and CT scanning facilities. A new 3T MRI facility (private) is open within close proximity to the hospital. A new on-site CSSD is to be inaugurated imminently allowing for faster turnover of instrument trays. There is a 15-bed Day Care Unit next to main theatres - all elective Orthopaedic patients come through the Day Care Unit, and most F&A patients are discharged home same day after surgery. A team of four General Surgical and three Orthopaedic junior doctors takes on ward work, assists in theatre and provides first on-call cover for Orthopaedics. The Anaesthetic consultant/registrar team supports daily Orthopaedic lists and 3 Trauma lists per week and offers 24-hour emergency cover. An in-house Pain specialist accepts direct referrals from Orthopaedics. Head and chest injuries and diabetic foot conditions are under the care of General Surgery. The Paediatric Orthopaedic out-patient service is offered at SBH by a Visiting Consultant from Great Ormond Street Hospital (UK). The Physiotherapy team organizes the Spinal Service in conjunction with a visiting UK neuro/spinal surgeons who hold regular clinics at SBH. There is robust microbiology support from a UK-based microbiologist who also oversees SBH lab services and provides detailed up-to-date treatment advice. Orthopaedic infection rate is very low due to thorough screening practices. There are monthly in-house CPD sessions and departmental M&M meetings. Attendance and active participation is expected. Regular junior doctor and A&E MSK teaching is offered by the Orthopaedic team. Gibraltar is a favourite with elective medical students from the UK and elsewhere.
