Summary


We are pleased to advertise a full time Band 5 Permanent Orthoptic post. You are invited to join a team of enthusiastic and motivated Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists and Ophthalmic technicians at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospital trust. We would expect the applicant to do a wide range of adult and paediatric complex clinics.

We believe this role is ideal for a newly qualified Orthoptist that is enthusiastic, willing to work hard and is a team player. The post holder will gain expertise in fast paced busy paediatric clinics involving complex strabismus and neurology. They will be assessing adult patients in the ocular motility clinic as well as specialist neuro clinics and A+E patients. The post holder will have a mentor and be well supported throughout their role. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop core orthoptic clinical practice.

Applicants must have a degree/diploma in Orthoptics and be registered with HCPC. The job would be subject to criminal records check, references and a health check.

Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital Orthoptic Department serves a busy London Teaching hospital, Tertiary referral Centre and the Evelina Children’s Hospital. We support a Professor of Ophthalmology specialising in Ocular Motility, four Paediatric Consultants as well as a busy A&E department and all other sub specialistsofophthalmology.Thedepartmentsupportsundergraduateplacementsfor 8.5 months of the year.
• To provide appropriate and accurate Orthoptic assessment for all patients referred to the department as in patients or outpatients, including patients with special needs.
• To assess patients preoperatively and post operatively
• To liaise with other professionals such as ECLO, ophthalmic techs, consultants, and work within a multi-disciplinary team
• To assist with clinical admin.
• To assess patients for adjustable sutures post operatively
• To liaise with Head or Dept Orthoptist regarding any problems regarding service delivery.
• To be able to perform appropriate perimetry automated and manual fields.
• To interpret the results from the Humphrey Visual field analyser and Goldmann Perimeter.
• To attend departmental meetings for the Ophthalmology and Orthoptic department as well as appropriate training events
• To attend and contribute to departments journal club
• To comply with departmental quality procedures, participating in quality management monitoring. This will include audits for hospital ophthalmology services.
• To observe and maintain professional standards at all times.
• To be involved with departmental teaching
• To be involved in clinical placements of work experience students, Orthoptic Students, Optometry Students, Medical Students, GPs, Health Visitors, CMOs and Ophthalmologists etc.
• To attend an appraisal or PDR at least annually
• Assist and provide internal cover for colleagues during periods of annual leave, sickness and vacancies cross-site.
