Summary
The Service Charge Accountant will be responsible for managing all aspects of service charge and client accounting for their clients. The role involves ensuring compliance with regulations, maintaining accurate financial records, and delivering timely reporting to clients and internal stakeholders. The position also carries responsibility for managing accounting systems, overseeing processes, supporting projects, and contributing to the development of the wider accounts team.
Duties of Senior Service Charge Accountant:
- Preparation and reconciliation of annual service charge accounts
- Production of service charge budgets and forecasts in consultation with property managers and fee earners.
- Accounting responsibility for key and complex commercial and residential portfolio clients.
- Ownership of accounts systems and processes, ensuring they are used effectively and efficiently.
- Daily and monthly reconciliation of all bank accounts to the accounts database.
- Updating and maintaining the accounts database and associated records.
- Maintenance of accounting files and electronic records to a high standard.
- Overseeing and producing monthly and quarterly financial statements for your own portfolio and supporting the wider team.
- Monitoring expenditure against budgets and investigating variances.
- Arrears reporting and chasing in conjunction with property managers.
- Preparation and submission of HMRC returns and reporting requirements.
- Liaising with fee earners to ensure smooth operation of service charge and residential management cycles.
- Onboarding new developments and managing the financial handover process, including reviewing previous managing agents’ accounts.
- Managing the year-end process, liaising with auditors, and resolving related queries.
- Tracking and resolving accounting problems and discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Providing clear, professional responses to client and tenant queries.
Essential:
- Previous experience in service charge accounting
- Strong knowledge of service charge legislation
- Excellent numeracy and analytical skills with close attention to detail.
- Proven ability to manage accounting systems, databases, and processes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software packages.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with clients and internal stakeholders
