Summary
Clinical Duties To assess patients with foot problems, diagnosing and planning appropriate treatment and taking into account such factors as patient health and social circumstances, likely compliance and the known effectiveness of surgery for their condition. To appropriately utilise diagnostic aids in the diagnosis and the treatment planning process. To advise patients on benefits, potential risks and complications of invasive treatments and lead the informed-consent process and support material, for example, patient literature. To prescribe non-surgical treatment where appropriate, including injection therapy, drug therapy, and referral to musculoskeletal practitioners. To admit and be responsible for the care of surgical patients up to the point of discharge, including management of post-operative complications To work collaboratively with the theatre teams to ensure the safe running of operating theatre lists. To administer and have advanced knowledge of local anaesthesia and regional anaesthetic techniques. To have knowledge of preoperative sedation techniques. To perform surgical procedures of the foot and its related structures on patients. Specifically this will include rearfoot osteotomies, fusions, tendon transfers, complex foot deformity correction and surgery to the Achilles tendon and ankle ligaments. To be responsible for the management of escalated occurrences of post-operative pain for podiatric service patients. To prescribe and administer prescription- only drug treatment, including analgesics, antibiotics and corticosteroid medication To review post-op progress, advise on rehabilitation and provide timely interventions in managing complications. To be responsible for the appropriate management of all post-operative complications for podiatric service patients. To be available for telephone only on-call duties until 9.30pm on day of surgery. To maintain and improve assessment and treatment knowledge and skills based upon the best practice, particularly specialist knowledge and skills relevant in podiatric surgery provision. This may include but not limited to diagnostic imaging, histology, diabetes, haematology, pharmacology, general medicine, rheumatology, biomechanics and wound management. To have individual responsibility, and be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of clinical work for patients; delegating as necessary and referring onwards in cases where other clinical expertise is required. To maintain and complete the appropriate clinical records and statistics as required by IHG. To complete the necessary statistical requirements to enable appropriate monitoring and commissioning of podiatric surgery services.Key Responsibilities To be an effective part of the podiatric services department; adhering to IHG values, policies and procedures and actively contributing to their development. To take an active role in monitoring performance within the podiatric surgery service. To contribute to the development and review of local protocols and procedures to ensure patient safety at all times including all parts of the surgical pathway. In conjunction with the Patient Referral Team plan and organise day to day patient workload effectively, balancing this with meetings, health promotion activities and communication with other professionals and agencies involved in the delivery of care. To audit clinical outcomes of surgical intervention and participate in other audit activities to demonstrate value and quality of service provided. To assist in clinical governance, health & safety, risk management and ensure requirements are met for the podiatric surgery team and requirements for the CQC. To work with the Clinical Lead in promoting the podiatric surgery services to our commissioners and other partners in the health economy. To develop a team approach to providing podiatric surgery services by encouraging the development of good working relationships and partnerships with all staff groups. To provide a specific resource, locally and nationally for providing education and training to support best podiatric surgical practice. Professional To maintain registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and fulfilling the continued professional development requirements. To work within the HCPC code of conduct and adhere to the patients charter. To constantly maintain and upgrade clinical skills, especially in specialist areas required for provision of Podiatric surgery. To actively contribute to clinical governance initiatives and developments. To comply with professional standards and contribute to the development of departmental standards. To undergo annual individual performance review.Communication To liaise closely with other healthcare professionals in relation to patient care. To act as a source of expertise for stakeholders on issues relating to the provision of podiatric surgery services To ensure effective communication with patients, relatives and carers. This will include not only healthcare advice but also with general patient/care enquiries regarding all aspects of the service. To maintain accurate records of all patient treatments and assessments in line with the clinical records policy when delivering agreed treatment plans. To maintain patient confidentiality and meet the requirements of the Data Protection Act at all times. To attend and actively contribute to Clinical Review meetings.
