Full Time - Fixed Term - 3 Months

The Opportunity

This post represents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and proactive Research Assistant to join the research laboratory led by Dr Roberto Galizi at Keele University. The successful candidate will contribute to a research effort aimed to develop capacity and expertise of African scientists in molecular biology, bioinformatics and vector genetics applied to the control of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes.

The role will involve support with the design and analysis of experimental procedures including molecular cloning, mosquito genetic engineering and their genetic and phenotypic characterisation in the laboratory. The post holder will also assist two PhD students with bioinformatic and mathematical modelling trainings as well as provide remote support with the development of the African Center for Excellence in Molecular Engineering (ACEME) at the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technologies of Bamako, Bamako (Mali).

The successful candidate will hold a master’s degree in relevant subject. Experience of working in a laboratory setting is essential along with specialist knowledge of research methods and techniques in the research area such as molecular biology, gene editing, bioinformatics, insect genetics and engineering. Previous work experience using insects, and/or genetic engineering technologies in insects or model organisms and practical knowledge of CRISPR tools is desirable.
