JOB DESCRIPTION

Personal Assistant

A LITTLE ABOUT MYSELF

I am a 14-year-old autistic boy with no speech. I use gesturing and grid software on my iPad to communicate my needs. I enjoy the outdoors, visiting beaches around the Vale for a walk and an ice cream (the Knap, Barry Island, Porthkerry), the Barrage and Roath Park. I also enjoy shopping and visiting Greggs or McDonalds. My mums would like my PA to take me trampolining and swimming on occasion and would welcome other suggestions from the PA for new activities to try. At home I enjoy listening to music on my iPad, and spending time in my garden and hot tub.

I have sensory modulation difficulties (can be affected by my environment for examples sounds and temperature) and I can be anxious in unfamiliar situations, environments or if I am required to wait for a long time or if I don’t understand what is expected of me. This can result in me hitting my head, kicking my shins and/or crying. In familiar environments and where I understand expectations I am a happy, loving teenager who enjoys social interaction.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The purpose of the job is to provide me with support out in the community mainly, but care in my home may be required on occasions. I have two small pet dogs so you must be comfortable in the company of my dogs in my home. This will allow me to do the things I enjoy.

HOURS OF WORK

There are 4 hours a week available to be worked with some flexibility. If less hours are required, this this may be shared with another PA, by working alternative weeks i.e. 8 hours per month.

During term time this will be on the weekend, 4 hours on a Saturday or Sunday to be agreed upon appointment.

RATES OF PAY

£14.50 per hour plus 40p per mile where applicable

TASKS CAN INCLUDE

Making sure I am safe at all times when out and in my home environment.
Taking me out in your own car for which mileage will be paid.
Taking me to activities that I may want to do.
Personal care, for example, support with adjusting clothing, fastening clothes, shoelaces
Support with using grid and use of picture scheduling (e.g. now and next)

TYPE OF PERSON REQUIRED

A friendly, confident active person
A patient person, someone who understands how my disability affects me.
Experience of working with a young autistic person with little use of speech. Use of PECs and visual scheduling would be an advantage
A non smoker.
A car driver with a valid driver’s license and business insurance who is willing to use their car for which mileage will be paid.
A person who respects the privacy and confidentiality of working in someone’s home.
Someone who is willing to participate in some of the activities I enjoy doing e.g. swimming, trampolining

The post is subject to satisfactory references and a DBS (Police) Check - which will need to be carried out before employment can commence. The cost of this will be met by the employer (Local Authority).
