Your role:
As a Policy Officer, you’ll be part of a team that’s helping to shape a fairer, more connected borough. This is an excellent opportunity for someone at who wants to make a real difference. You’ll join a fast-paced, innovative and proactive policy function that informs decision-making and drives forward the Progress with Unity missions and 6 ways of working in Wigan Borough.
This varied and rewarding role would particularly suit a recent graduate who is eager to develop their skills and gain hands-on experience in policy and strategy. You’ll contribute to the development of council policy, support the delivery of community engagement and equality projects, and work across services and partnerships to help us achieve our shared ambitions.
About you:
On an ongoing basis you will:
- Develop Insightful Policy: Draft accessible, evidence-based reports and briefings that inform senior leaders and elected members, ensuring alignment with our strategic direction.
- Scan the Horizon: Monitor national developments to identify emerging trends, risks, and opportunities that matter to Wigan Borough.
- Translate Policy into Practice: Analyse local, regional, and national policy shifts and assess their impact on our work, helping shape responses that are timely and effective.
- Champion Inclusion: Support the development of policies and actions that promote equality and community belonging, contributing to a fairer borough for all.
- Enable Collaboration: Assist in coordinating engagement activities with residents, partners, and stakeholders, ensuring diverse voices are heard. Including administration of our engagement portal.
- Support Strategic Delivery: Contribute to the implementation of council strategies and help measure their impact.
- Strengthen Networks: Support the council’s role in regional and national forums, including GMCA, through research, coordination, and policy development.
- Promote Learning and Innovation: Assist in research projects that bring fresh thinking to local challenges and help share learning across teams and partners.
- Live Our Values: Embody the Be Wigan behaviours in everything you do.
- Visits and events: Support the organisation and hosting of visits and events
- Maintaining and maximising partnerships: Support strong, collaborative relationships with partners to deliver shared priorities and improve outcomes for people and place.
- Undertake additional duties appropriate with the level of the post.
