Summary


Applications are invited from motivated and enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who are looking to start or progress their careers in Clinical Biochemistry. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within the Blood Sciences department in state of the art laboratories on the Southmead site. The redeveloped Southmead site opened in May 2014 and is one of Europe’s leading hospitals.

The department provides a routine Biochemistry testing service to all inpatient, outpatient and GP surgeries in the North Bristol area. It has a workload of over 1 million specimen requests per annum.

The Clinical Biochemistry department offers an extensive range of diagnostic and clinical services, including an integrated Blood Sciences Automated Laboratory, Toxicology, Biochemical Genetics, Newborn Screening and Point of Care Testing services. The majority of the successful candidates will have the opportunity to rotate throughout the department and will be expected to participate in the department’s 24-7 service.

The post holder under the direction of senior staff will be expected to:
• Work as part of a team to provide a diagnostic laboratory service in Clinical Biochemistry in accordance with National, Trust and Departmental policies and procedures on a rotational basis in all sections (Automation, Biochemical Genetics, Newborn Screening and Toxicology) of the laboratory.
• Participate in the training and development of other staff within the department.
• Participate fully in the department’s 24/7 rota system
Contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.

1. Working in accordance with the Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these as required.
2. Receiving and analysing samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
Assisting in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
3. Responsible for the provision of our service to patients in routine and emergency situations.
4. Rotating into any area of the department as required.
5. Participating fully in the department’s 24/7 rota service.
6. Prioritising the completion of urgent requests.
7. Telephoning important results to an appropriate person when necessary
8. Responsible for their own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff
9. Validating and releasing results to service users as required
10. Maintaining a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate
11. Preparing and ensuring adequate supplies of reagents and consumables
12. Using consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies
13. Performing the routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment with which she/he is working including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions
14. Processing internal and external quality control samples as required
15. Participating in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual
16. Participating in risk management of the department including the reporting of adverse incidents
17. Assisting in research and development projects as required
18. Assisting in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLA’s, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required
19. Participating in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures
20. Undertaking continued professional development
21. Personally responsible for maintaining HCPC Registration
22. Participating in all other activities in the section to enable the department to maintain compliance with ISO15189 (2022).
