Summary
The Assistive Technology Service is responsible for the assessment, provision and maintenance of environmental control systems (ECS), which are installed in the homes of people with severe and complex disabilities to maximise personal independence and reduce dependence on their carer.The systems are individually prescribed and configured to suit the needs of the user, and enable that user to continue to live in their own home with significantly enhanced independence, security and quality of life.
The service is commissioned by NHS England and covers an extensive and diverse geographical area, which includes 5 London boroughs, Surrey and West Sussex.
The wide geographic area covered by the service necessitates skilled and effective communication with a large number of Social services and care agents, all with differing policies and systems. The postholder has to be flexible and sensitive to these variations when planning client interventions to ensure positive and achievable outcomes.
There is a high volume of lone working and travel in this post as the majority of time is spent with clients in their homes.
St George’s University Hospital’s NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a Band 5 Assistive Technology Engineer to join the well established Assistive Technology team based at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.
The successful applicant will join the team providing assessment, installation and maintenance of environmental controls throughout the commissioned area. A driver with full license is therefore essential and must have access to their own vehicle with appropriate insurance for work purposes.
A highly motivated and organised individual, with previous clinical engineering experience, is required to join this busy service. Working in conjunction with internal and external health professionals, they will assess, prescribe, install and maintain equipment to meet the need of individual clients.
The role will also include the refurbishment of equipment and maintaining the equipment store to a high standard.
The applicant will be expected to participate in the training of others, CPD, audit and evaluation of products.
The successful applicant will need to have, or be working towards an appropriate qualification and be a member (or eligible for membership/willing to work towards) of the Register of Clinical Technologists.

The post holder with have the following specific role –
• To provide highly specialised Environmental Control services to adults and children with complex disabilities in order to improve their independence, quality of life, safety and participation whilst working autonomously and without direct supervision, and being accountable for own professional actions
• Manage the design and development of custom electronic AT devices.
• Provide and maintain appropriate equipment as required by patients to meet their needs (as defined by the service specifications).
• Adapt equipment as required to meet the individual and changing needs of the individuals.
• Provide these services directly to a wide region and manage the provision of services throughout the commissioned region
• To independently manage and complete refurbishment of equipment to high standard
• To manage stock within the equipment store including stock levels, tidiness with consideration for health and safety and infection control.
• To provide expert and complex technical input around the acceptance testing, evaluation and provision of these devices.
• Provide the service in an independent, unbiased, cost effective and accountable way.
• To have a key role in development of the service and be responsible for implementing changes within the setting and monitoring standards of practice.
• Provide advice and training in assistive technology to professionals within region as well as patients, carers and family members
• Promote the development and application of assistive technology products.
• To be responsible for aspects of service policy, planning, organisation, development and delivery.
• To ensure resources are managed and monitored each month in order to be available to meet client need throughout the financial year.
• To work collaboratively and strategically with the Service Lead to meet organisational objectives and to develop service policies and procedures.
