Summary
• Provide direct client care and have detailed clinical knowledge of the specialist area.
• To be responsible for providing extra support and care to some pregnant women with mental health problems, in partnership with the named midwife, the specialist perinatal mental health team and external agencies.
• To work closely with women and their families to plan and coordinate their care based on their individual needs. They will provide a link between the maternity service and other services involved in mental health care.
• Assist the band 7 specialist midwife to ensure that high standards of quality care are delivered and maintained.
• To Deputise for the specialist midwife as required.
• To promote the use of quality improvement methods by frontline staff in order to deliver measurable improvements in patient care.
• To act as a resource of specialist knowledge to other members of the multidisciplinary team

• Act as a woman’s advocate in promoting, and delivering the highest standard ofmidwiferycare, ensuring all fundamentals of care are addressed, and current, relevant policies and procedures are adhered to.
• Act as a source of specialist knowledge and clinical expertise to ensure that the care provided to the client group is appropriate and that there is early recognition of condition changes to ensure that appropriate management is identified and actioned.

• Develop and implement programs of evidence based care planning for client group and their families.

• Provide direct midwifery care in a variety of practice settings, having detailed clinical knowledge of the specialist area.
• Undertake immediate assessment and determine priority ofwomen within any setting. Act as a resource in the coordination and effective management of the admission and discharge process.
• Act aswomen’sadvocate in promoting, and delivering the highest standard ofmidwiferycare, ensuring all fundamentals of care are addressed, and current, relevant policies and procedures are adhered to.
• Prepare accurate and concise reports, both written & verbal. Provide detailed and complex assessments and reports for social services and court proceedings. Work in close partnership with the safeguarding team, and when required lead on the safeguarding for clients.
• Using evidence-based practice, assess womens' physical, psychological and spiritual needs, create care plans, implement and evaluatemidwiferycare involvingwomenandtheir families,as appropriate.
• Provide a visible clinical profile, having both an advisory and clinical input into patient care.
• Act as a resource in the coordination and effective management of the admission and discharge process through the maternity unit for women with complex mental health needs.
• Ensure that all client documentation is appropriate, accountable and defensible. Disseminating all relevant changes in the client’s condition to the MDT.
• Plan and manage own workload and that of the service in a flexible manner to meet client needs.
• Support the team to tackle health inequalities and social exclusion.
• Ensure all records and documentation including electronic records are accurate legible and completed in a timely manner
• Ensure practice meets the requirements of a practicing midwife in accordance with NMC requirements
• Responsibilities for Policy and Service Development
• To work within policy, professional and legal frameworks at all times. This requires knowledge of Nursing & Midwifery Code of Conduct, NMC Adult / Child Protection Protocols, MHA & MCA policies, risk assessment formulation and Trust Policy and Procedures.
• Contribute to investigating any accidents, complaints, defects in equipment, near misses and untoward incidents, and produce reports as requested by Line manager.
• Ensure through own knowledge that individual is up-to-date with legal matters that may arise during course of duty.

• Responsible for ensuring stock levels are adequate to support smooth running of the department.

• Oversee the provision ofmidwiferycare, providing guidance and support to junior staff in this area. Lead and Participate in education and training of all staff.
• Assist with induction programmes for newly appointed staff and contribute to ensuring an effective learning environment for all staff.
• Participate in appraisal. Develop an annual Personal Development Plan to identify Training and Development needs, in line with personal and organisational objectives.
• Support colleagues’ development, including clinical supervision. Assist in monitoring progress of studentmidwives; providing written reports on progress.
• Comply with and facilitate preceptorship and mentoring for all new learners, ensuring support to all newly qualified staff.
• Act as Mentor/Assessor for all learners, junior staff
