National Highways has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Structures Engineer to join our Yorkshire and Northeast team on a permanent basis. This senior role will play a pivotal part in providing advanced technical leadership and strategic oversight in the asset management, maintenance, and enhancement of highway structures, including bridges and other critical infrastructure.

As a Senior Structures Engineer, you will lead multidisciplinary teams in the development and implementation of asset management strategies for substandard and critical structures, driving innovation and ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices. You will act as a key advisor on complex structural engineering challenges, collaborating closely with stakeholders to deliver sustainable, cost-effective solutions.

This role can be based from our Wakefield, Leeds or Darlington office.

Please note that this role requires regular driving; applicants must have no more than 3 penalty points on their driving licence both at the time of application and during employment.

  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams and resources in the identification, evaluation, and strategic planning of asset data and structural needs, ensuring alignment with organisational priorities and methodologies.
  • Drive the development and validation of innovative early solutions for asset improvements and renewals, including detailed value management, feasibility studies, and risk assessments that incorporate cutting-edge techniques, materials, and buildability considerations.
  • Oversee the monitoring and delivery of agreed improvement plans, proactively managing risks and resolving technical or operational issues in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Provide senior technical guidance and quality assurance for contractors and internal teams during design and construction phases, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and performance requirements.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, technical excellence, and knowledge sharing.

About you

  • Chartered Structural or Civil Engineer (CEng) with significant experience in managing and designing highway structures and Degree or HND in relevant discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and highway construction practices.
  • Experience leading projects and teams to deliver asset management and renewal solutions.
  • Understanding of Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations and health & safety responsibilities.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work well with different teams and stakeholders.
