Summary

Duties of post1. The post holder will participate in the Consultant led trauma service to maintain ahigh quality trauma service with Consultant involvement in early operative work andfracture clinic supervision. The appointee would be encouraged to further developand update skills in the acute management of complex fractures and themanagement of a foot & ankle service.2. Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust serves a young sporty population and thereferrals of sports related and soft tissue problems are also increasing. Thecandidate will be expected to be competent in managing these patients.3. The post holder will be required to adopt a continuing responsibility for the care ofpatients in his/her charge in partnership with other consultant colleagues.4. He/she will be expected to fully participate in the teaching activities of theDirectorate.5. For the purpose of management and use of resources, he/she will be accountableto the Clinical Director of Orthopaedics and work closely with the Service Manager.6. He/she will share in the Directorates management and administrativeresponsibilities.7. The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties inoccasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.8. The appointee will be responsible for the professional supervision andmanagement of junior staff and participate in their appointment with otherConsultants.9. The appointee will be expected to participate in postgraduate teaching of medicalstaff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades ofstaff.10. The appointee will participate on a regular basis in the process of Clinical Auditwithin the department and take on the audit role for the department. The appointeewill be expected to attend department and divisional clinical governance meetingsas requested.11. He/she will be required to maintain an on-call (1:8) commitment and to provideprospective cover for colleagues on a mutually agreed basis in respect of absencefrom duty. He/she will be expected to co-operate in the present agreed frameworkof the directorate management structure arrangements.Page 9 of 182. On Call RequirementUnder the Terms and Conditions of the Service of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff it isexpected that the Consultant will have continuing responsibility for patients admitted under hiscare, taking into consideration a shared on-call amongst 10 Consultants.Active participation on the On-Call currently at 1:8 weekdays and 1:9 weekends is a pre-requisite.3. Special InterestThe current Consultants interests include knee surgery, foot & ankle, soft tissue knee, hipsurgery, paediatric surgery and upper limb surgery. The trauma load is shared equally amongstthe Consultants and a Trauma Meeting is held each weekday morning at 8.00 am. Someminimal invasive and minimal access surgery is conducted in the Trust. The development of aspecialist interest in foot & ankle to compliment the above would be encouraged.4. Teaching RequirementThis post will be expected to participate in Audit, teaching of Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Nursingand Allied Health Professionals.The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in continuing postgraduate medical educationby attending conferences and training courses as required by the RCS.The Department of Orthopaedic surgery has developed a strong commitment to teaching andtraining. There are daily trauma teaching meetings so as to plan the treatment of emergencypatients for the day. We participate actively in South East Thames Orthopaedic training andhave designated weekly teaching sessions for the junior doctors in the department.There will be opportunity for research/CPD during the supporting professional activitysessions. These sessions are designed to give the individual the flexibility to develop aspecialist interest, undertake some research or teaching of the junior medical staff and tomaintain skills.All Consultants will be expected to register for CPD.
