Summary
The Emergency Nurse/Care Practitioner will work as an autonomous clinician with in a nurse led Minor Injury Unit without reference to a doctor, providing expert assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients presenting with minor injuries. He/she will be part of a team of nursing, medical and allied professionals leading in the delivery of a high-quality service to patients presenting with lower acuity illness and injury. The post holder will. Deliver safe, effective and evidence-based care from initial presentation through discharge or referral. Utilise advanced clinical decision making, diagnostic, and prescribing/PGD skills to ensure high quality patient outcomes Act as a clinical leader, providing supervision, mentorship, and education to junior colleagues and students. Promote high standards of professional practice, safeguarding, and health promotion in line with national and local guidance. Contribute to service development, audit, research, and quality improvement to enhance patient outcomes and service efficiency. Key Duties: Clinical Responsibilities Undertake autonomous assessment, diagnose, treatment, and management of patients presenting with minor injuries Order and interpret appropriate investigations (e.g., Xrays, wound swabs, ECGs) Prescribe safely and appropriately under independent/non-medical prescribing authority or PGD guidance. Provide effective patient education, safety-netting, and discharge planning. Recognise, initiate, and escalate care for patients requiring urgent or emergency intervention. Ensure accurate documentation and use of clinical IT systems in line with Trust policy Will develop and consistently maintain a philosophy for the treatment service. Will work closely with the Department Manager and Matron in developing the role of the Emergency Nurse practitioner. Will develop, implement and monitor guidelines, standards, policies, protocols/care pathways. Will develop excellent working relationships with all members of the Emergency Care team. Will continue to develop expertise in practice and promote KGH MIU as a centre of excellence in nursing practice. Will provide clinical support and advice to all members of the Emergency Care team. Will support the key quality indicators ensuring 15-minute triage times and 4 hr breaches are met and assist with initial assessment of all patients in MIU. The Emergency Nurse/Care Practitioner will exercise his/her level of judgement in the management and further care of patients within his/her scope of practice. Maintain a high profile in the clinical area act as a role model for other health care professionals. The post holder will analyse relevant performance data and produce and implement improvement plans and audits to monitor an improve performance to feedback to the Department Manager. Will be part of the emergency responder and hospital bleep holder team. Professional and Personal Responsibilities Provide clinical leadership within the Minor Injury Unit. Act as a role model, promoting high standards of care and professional behaviour Supervise and support junior staff, students, and trainees within the multidisciplinary team. Contribute to rota planning, clinical governance, and service delivery as required. Participate in safeguarding, incident reporting, and risk management processes Ensure that he/she remains up to date in professional developments and pro-actively seeks to develop his/her knowledge and skills as required by the NMC. Proactively evaluate his/her practice and the service provided to patients using tools such as clinical audit and patient and staff feedback. Participate and facilitate the provision of clinical supervision amongst colleagues and peers. Will undertake the non-medical prescribing course Quality and Service Improvement Participate in clinical audit, service evaluation, and implementation of evidence-based practice Support research activity within the department where appropriate Contribute to the development and clinical guidelines, care pathways and protocols. Promote a culture of continuous improvement, patient safety, and patient centred care. Education and Training Promote a positive learning environment within the department for patients, clinical staff and learners. Plan programmes of education and training for all staff and contribute to the development of practice at all levels. Establish and maintain links with other ENPs in other organisations with a purpose of mutual support and professional development. Maintain competence and confidence in treating patients with minor injuries, this will include participating in case study and peer review, clinical audit and risk assessment.
