Summary

The Government Car Service (GCS) is a division of the Government Security Group within the Cabinet Office. GCS operate from a base in Bermondsey, South London that has its own in-house workshop facility.

GCS provide car and driver services for Government ministers and senior civil servants.

We now have vacancies for two Motor Vehicle Technicians to service and maintain our fleet of cars and any other vehicles that may pass through our workshop.

The post holder will be expected to work a 37-hour week over 5 days, Monday to Friday, working with a small team to deliver the high standard of quality work that is expected.

The primary role is to be responsible for the day-to-day servicing and maintenance of the GCS motor vehicle fleet and any other Government Department vehicles that may wish to use our workshop facility.

There will be a considerable amount of work carried out un supervised but well within the scope of a skilled technician.

The post holder will be expected to have knowledge of advanced diagnostic systems as regular of use of this type of equipment will be essential to complete various tasks on the on the multitude of car models presented for repair. The ability to carry out tyre fitting/ balancing plus steering alignment will also be required.

The role is expected to hold a full driving licence with a sound knowledge of MoT regulations and ideally would be a Class IV Nominated Tester. Training and refresher training will be available to achieve and maintain this qualification. Desirable would be to hold a licence to drive a 7.5 tonne recovery vehicle to attend GCS vehicles when required. Specific training would be available to any successful candidate.

The post holder must be prepared to be instructed by the Workshop supervisor as to how certain servicing and repairs will be carried out and expected to follow these instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Possess the ability to produce a continuous high-quality standard of work using best practices at all times;
  • Understand the full responsibilities of this role and the importance to act appropriately at all times;
  • To service, diagnose faults and repair EV, Hybrid and ICE vehicles;
  • Be familiar with using advanced diagnostic equipment to achieve a first time fix and minimise vehicle downtime;
  • To complete detailed technical reports as required;
  • To maintain their own continual personal development by keeping up to date with latest technical developments / legislation and be prepared to attend manufacturers training courses as required;
  • Carry out MoT testing;
  • To uphold the Civil Service Code values of integrity, honesty, objectivity and impartiality.
