Applications are invited for a Senior Biomedical Scientist post within Haematology Department to support the Haemostasis team within the Department.

Oxford is a large Tertiary Teaching Hospital with a Trauma Centre, a Cancer Centre and a wide variety of Specialist Services several of whom have their own unique Haematology requirements.

The Department of LaboratoryHaematology operating from the Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford site; Haematology Lab, JRH, and Haematology Lab, Horton site.

The Oxford University Hospital Haematology has a more diverse range of testing being carried out than many other Hospitals. The Department is UKAS 15189 and HCPC accredited, in Oxford and Banbury.

Oxford has a higher than average commitment to Research both as a stand alone institution and in collaboration with Clinical colleagues in Oxford University with multiple papers produced and the right candidate would be able to contribute.

The candidate must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist.

The department undertakes a high volume of routine testing 700-750,000 FBC, The Haemophilia and Thrombosis Unit is one of the oldest and largest in the country, with a commitment to service and R&D. presently equipped with Sysmex CN equipment on 4 sites.

The Department has recently implemented a new pan S4 Network IT system

Section Responsibilities:Haemostasis Laboratory
• The post is mainly based in the Oxford Hospitals but the ability to travel to the Horton site may be necessary. A flexible approach to working hours is an advantage.

The Haemostasis service (as part of the UKAS accredited Haematology Laboratory) processes approximately 300,000 samples per annum in the including a wide range of Specialist testing associated with a large Haemophilia Centre.

We require a suitably qualified Senior Healthcare Scientist to jointly lead (as part of a small team) the day to day delivery of Haemostasis testing and development within the OUH Haematology Department. The Laboratories perform a full repertoire of routine and complex coagulation testing acting as a referral centre for an extended region. Automation is based around 7 Sysmex CN analysers and Abbott track connectivity.

Rotating predominantly between the Churchill and John Radcliffe sites this is an exciting opportunity to develop and support yourself and others in the field of Haemophilia and Thrombosis.

Candidates should have a keen interest in Haemostasis being able to demonstrate a commitment to this area through previous work and knowledge. Experience of Sysmex analysers although desirable is not essential.

It is expected that the successful candidate will participate in the Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre on-call rota and delivery of basic Haemostasis lectures at local Oxford Brookes University.

To supervise/organise staff/work within section/area of expertise, ensuring work is completed within acceptable timescales and coordinates the training of all levels of staff within the section.

To perform, analyse, interpret, document and report both routine and highly complex laboratory investigations of a highly specialised nature commensurate with the professional grade that will impact directly on patient care.

The postholder will exercise autonomy within professional and managerial boundaries and will be required to verify and validate completed work.

To liaise/cooperate with hospital clinicians other healthcare professionals, suppliers/manufacturers and their agents, patients and their representatives.

Participate in the strategic development of the section and deputise for their line manager in their absence.

Provide supervisory cross cover in related sections of the laboratory when required, maintaining competency in these sections.

The work may include some weekend, and evening duties, which requires a flexible approach to the hours of employment subject to terms and conditions
