Summary

Overview of responsibilities Work in clinics covering phlebotomy. Develop own knowledge and skills, and provide information to others. Assist in maintaining own health and safety, and that of others. Assist in maintaining and developing services for patients. Ensure own actions promote quality and alert others to quality issues. Ensure own actions support equality, diversity and rights. Assist in assessing and addressing peoples health and well-being and related needs. Protect health and well-being Specific responsibilities 1. Communication a. Communicate effectively with other team members to support delivery of care. b. Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication. 2. Personal and people development a. Take responsibility for own developmental learning and performance, including participating in supervision. b. Take responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal development. c. Work with management on any new training requirements. d. Demonstrate skills and activities to others who are undertaking similar work. 3. Health, safety and security a. Know and use the personal security systems within the workplace. b. Identify the risks involved in work activities and undertake them in a way that manages the risks. c. Make effective use of training to update knowledge and skills. d. Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards. Reporting of any potential risks identified, including: hand washing universal hygiene procedures collection and handling of laboratory specimens segregation and disposal of waste materials decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment reporting and treatment of sharps injuries dealing with blood and body fluid spillages. e. Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures. f. Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate. g. Be aware of safeguarding adults and children policies and procedures, and local guidance and referral criteria. h. Know the health and safety policies and procedures within the workplace, including fire procedures, maintaining documentation, monitoring and maintaining of equipment and furniture within your area of responsibility. i. Maintain confidentiality of patient data in relation to use of computers and handling data, following Practice policies and procedures. j. Be able to identify the risks to health of microbiological and chemical hazards within the working environment according to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. 4. Service improvement a. Be aware of and, if appropriate, assist in clinical audit. b. Work with colleagues in the team on the development of current and new services and other initiatives. c. Maintain any notice boards in waiting or clinic rooms and promote good health with educational material as required. d. Produce a list of health education leaflets for other clinicians relevant to the service. e. Deal with requests from patients and clinical staff for health information leaflets. 5. Quality a. Alert other team members to issues of quality and risk in the care of patients. b. Ensure own actions are consistent with clinical governance systems. c. Practice in accordance with agreed standards of care. d. Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the team and beyond. e. Ensure stock items under your control are ordered and available in the treatment and consulting rooms. f. Know how clinical governance affects the phlebotomist role and bring to the attention of more senior staff any specific risk situation. g. Know Practice Health policies in this respect, especially those related to information security available in the staff handbook, a copy of which is held in the office. h. Be able to manage your own time effectively. 6. Equality and diversity a. Act in ways that recognise the importance of peoples rights, interpreting them in a way that is consistent with procedures. b. Respect the privacy, dignity, needs and beliefs of patients and carers. c. Understand basic legal and communication issues regarding vulnerable adults and child abuse. d. Act as a chaperone (after suitable training). 7. Clinical skills health and well-being a. Venepuncture the collection of blood samples from individuals. b. Undertake any additional clinical tasks for which you have received appropriate training. 8. Clinical skills Venepuncture a. Check patient identification against GP/Nurse request form and confirm with patient whenever possible. b. Ensure that the patient is as relaxed and comfortable as possible and confirm their agreement to the collection of a blood sample. c. Collection of sample(s)s of blood in accordance with training and procedures using the appropriate collection system. d. Ensure samples are stored in appropriate containers and at the appropriate temperature. e. Check and/or prepare accurate, legible labelling of all samples to confirm patient identity. f. Record collection of blood sample in patient record in accordance with Practice procedure. g. Ensure that samples are dispatched to the appropriate laboratories in a timely fashion. h. Ensure that anomalies are reported to a senior member of staff. i. Notify the Nurse Practitioner of any significant patient issues. j) Liaise with and assist members of the administrative team 9. Information processes a. Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion using manual or computer systems as appropriate. b. Maintain confidentiality of information relating to patients, relatives, staff. c. Take the necessary precautions when transmitting information. d. Make effective use of the IT system by ensuring the consistent and accurate entering of data and use of eg. Read and other codes. e. Contribute to a satisfactory system of call and recall of patients. f. Take accurate messages and answer the phone in a courteous manner. g. Make recommendations to raise standards of practice and service delivery. 10. Working conditions a. Frequent exposure to body fluids, eg blood. b. Occasional exposure to over anxious behaviour. c. Frequent use of computer screens. d. Work in different locations within the Practice. e. There is a requirement to be flexible to provide cover for holidays and sickness 11. Terms and conditions of service Salary: £12.85 per hour Methods of payment: Monthly in arrears by bank credit transfer Hours of work: tba Health assessment: This post is subject to a satisfactory pre-employment health assessment Successful applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring service application form. 12.
