Summary

Clinical: 1. Work unsupervised, performing all CT, MR scans following imaging parameters set down in scanning protocols. 2. Liaise with referral source where clarification is required regarding the selection of the most clinically appropriate imaging examination and prioritise cases by urgent clinical need. 3. Act as a professional resource regarding CT, MR procedures for other directorate staff and clinical colleagues. 4. Act as a point of advice for patient enquiries regarding their referral. 5. Be fully aware of the potential hazards of working in an area of strong magnetic field and to be familiar with the Safety Guidelines for Magnetic Resonance Diagnostic Imaging Equipment in Clinical Use; Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) December 2007. Managerial responsibilities: 1. Deputise in the absence of senior staff such as section heads for CT & MR or band 7 radiographers and be responsible for the smooth day to day running of the CT & MRI department. 2. Be familiar with the range of technical applications available on imaging equipment. 3. Monitor and report equipment faults and to determine the severity of the problem and its probable impact on the workload. To make a balanced judgement on when to call in a service engineer, considering the effect on the normal running of the CT/ MR Service. 4. To liaise with equipment suppliers regarding the attendance of an engineer at a suitable time in the event of minor faults or immediately in the event of total equipment failure. 5. To re-arrange the work list in event of equipment failure, being responsive to the inconvenience caused to patients by short notice cancellation of appointments. Communication: 1. To assess specific communication needs of individual patients. To anticipate where communication difficulties might make completion of the MRI safety checklist impossible and implement alternative methods to ensure that patient safety is maintained. 2. Communicate effectively and empathetically with patients and their escorts prior to, during and after an examination. Analytical and Judgmental Skills: 1. Use analytical and judgement skills with regard to the interpretation of clinical information. Advise radiologists of the technical capabilities of the CT and MRI scanners and suggest appropriate sequences to better demonstrate a variety of common pathologies. Responsibilities for Human Resources: 1. To assist in the supervision and clinical instruction of undergraduate radiographic staff. 2. To undertake formalised assessments of undergraduate students and document findings in accordance with each academic institutions requirements. 3. To supervise and act as trainer for rotating radiographic staff. 4. Deliver appropriate structured / informal training to radiographic colleagues, other members of the trust and students on work experience, as appropriate. 5. Evaluate technology and its clinical application. 6. Take a lead in setting and monitoring of standards in own area. 7. Undertake any audit data collection and analysis required of the post.
