Summary

Clinical To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of the practitioners professional activities. To be responsible, as an autonomous practitioner, for the Physiotherapeutic management of children and young people in your care. To undertake the comprehensive assessment, carry out diagnostic procedures and interpret the results for children and young people with complex, multiple neurological conditions using investigative and analytical skills. To evaluate and reassess an individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plan, using clinical reasoning skills and utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options in order to formulate a specialised programme of care. To continue to develop skills and knowledge in order to provide physiotherapy advice, as part of a multi-disciplinary team relating to Chailey Postural Management. This involves assessment, prescription and on-going postural management reviews with relation to own clinical caseload. To participate in multi-disciplinary, multi-agency clinics within Chailey Clinical Services and at tertiary level. To provide treatment plans that are evidence based and are linked to a sound understanding of clinical governance. To provide advice on highly specialised physiotherapy care and treatment for children and young people based on theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience. To be responsible for manual handling assessments which provide guidelines for other members of the multi-disciplinary team To be responsible for safe use of physiotherapy equipment used by others. To comply with Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures. To undertake any other duties in line with the post and its grade. Communication and Working Relationships To work collaboratively with CHF education and care staff, all members of the multi-disciplinary teams at Chailey Clinical Services. To liaise with differing clinicians who may be in direct contact with the post holder with regard to patient care; other treating therapists, medical, nursing, wider MDT and school staff and other health care professionals working within the trust and externally. To communicate complex and sensitive information in an understandable form to carers and other staff including imparting unwelcome news. To motivate others and to gain co-operation for interventions where there may be significant barriers to understanding. To ensure timely and effective communication with the Physiotherapy Lead on all professional matters. To maintain an accurate and evaluative record keeping system, conforming to Trust policy and according to departmental standards, and supervise the records of physiotherapy assistants and students within each clinical area. To ensure that reports and discharge summaries are completed and sent in accordance with department policy. To ensure close links of communication with other therapists in the trust working with the CYP and their families To attend any meetings or case conferences and to liaise with and advise other disciplines as appropriate to achieve comprehensive, effective and confidential management of the young person To initiate and maintain contacts with local and national interest groups appropriate to the clinical field. Management To achieve the effective daily management of a caseload of children and young people including responding to urgent referrals, prioritising clinical work and balancing other related and professional activities in accordance with departmental standards. To manage potentially stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner. To work with the Physiotherapy team to provide an efficient and effective service and to be involved in the proposal/development and implementation of departmental policies. To contribute to the short and long term aims and objectives for the service and establish priorities with the lead physiotherapist. To be involved with working parties looking at policies that impact beyond the physiotherapy department. To participate in the managerial matters of the department including attendance at staff meetings as required. To be responsible to and deputise for the Band 7 physiotherapist in a flexible and adaptable way. To supervise physiotherapy assistants, Technical Instructors and volunteers where appropriate. To maintain and provide accurate and timely statistical information as required, in consultation with senior staff. To participate in the Trust Supervision Scheme, both as supervisee and as a supervisor. To ensure that all equipment defects, accidents and complaints are dealt with appropriately. Education To take a lead role in the education of students on placement, once a clinical educators course has been completed. To be responsible, with the Band 7 physiotherapist, for the training of T.Is and assistants within the clinical area. Also, in-service training, and teaching to other staff and carers. There is also the opportunity to become clinical educator for students. To be responsible for and actively record own personal professional development. To participate in the in-service and post-registration education programme and attend staff meetings. To be pro-active with regard to learning from senior staff within the department. To keep abreast in understanding and knowledge of all new developments which are applicable to specify physiotherapy treatments. Research / Audit / Quality To participate in appropriate work related research / evaluation projects and to be aware of current research relevant to the speciality. The physiotherapy department provides services to two areas; Chailey Clinical Services and Chailey Heritage School. Staff may be required to visit children in their homes during school holidays and occasionally at other times.
