Summary


As a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant on a renal and transplant ward, you will support registered nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals with acute or chronic kidney conditions. This role involves both clinical and personal care duties, with an increased level of responsibility compared to Band 2 HCAs, including undertaking specific clinical tasks under supervision and acting as a mentor to junior staff.

• Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as washing, dressing, toileting, and eating.
• Monitor and record vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, temperature, pulse, weight).
• Support patients undergoing renal treatments, including dialysis, as per training and competence.
• Recognise and report any changes in patients' conditions to registered nurses promptly.
• Promote and support patient mobility and rehabilitation.
• Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and families.
• Carry out basic wound care and skin checks.
• Perform urine testing, blood glucose monitoring, and specimen collection.
• Support with catheter care, stoma care, and fluid balance monitoring.
• Assist in the preparation and monitoring of patients undergoing dialysis.
• Participate in infection prevention and control procedures.
• Accurately document care and observations in patient notes or electronic systems.
• Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and colleagues.
• Assist in the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
• Escort patients to other departments when required.
• Supervise and support junior HCAs and students.
• Attend mandatory and role-specific training sessions.
• Participate in team meetings, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of renal care protocols and guidelines.

We are seeking a compassionate and proactive Band 3 Healthcare Assistant to join our busy renal and tranpsplant ward. The post holder will work under the supervision of registered nurses to provide high-quality, person-centred care to patients with acute and chronic kidney conditions, including those undergoing dialysis.

The role involves delivering both personal and clinical care, contributing to assessments, and supporting ward activities. The Band 3 level reflects additional responsibilities such as mentoring junior staff, undertaking delegated clinical tasks, and contributing to continuity of care.

Key responsibilities would include:
• Provide personal care, including hygiene, mobility, toileting, and feeding support
• Record and monitor vital signs, fluid balance, and report concerns promptly
• Assist with clinical duties such as blood glucose monitoring, wound care, and catheter care (as trained)
• Support patients receiving renal treatments, including dialysis
• Contribute to patient documentation and care planning
• Promote infection control and health & safety standards on the ward
• Supervise junior HCAs and support induction of new staff
Essential criteria would include:
• NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent)
• Previous experience in an acute hospital or renal setting desirable
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• Competent in basic clinical skills (training provided if needed)
