We are seeking an ambitious and inspirational Head of Learning Area English to join a forward-thinking secondary school in Essex. This is a key leadership opportunity for an experienced English teacher with a proven record of raising achievement and a passion for developing both staff and students.
As Head of Learning Area, you will be responsible for driving excellence in teaching and learning across the English department. You will oversee curriculum design, assessment strategies, and staff development while ensuring students achieve their best in GCSE and A-Level English. Your leadership will help foster a culture of creativity, rigour, and high expectations throughout the department.

Key Responsibilities
•
Provide leadership, direction, and management for the English department
•
Oversee curriculum planning, delivery, and assessment across KS3-KS5
•
Drive standards of teaching and learning, ensuring high achievement and progress
•
Mentor and support colleagues to develop their professional practice
•
Analyse student performance data to inform improvement strategies
•
Foster a culture of reading, literacy, and a love for language across the school
•
Contribute to whole-school leadership and strategic planning
•
Ensure effective resource management within the department
Qualifications and Experience
•
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and degree in English or a related subject
•
Proven experience teaching English at GCSE and A-Level with excellent outcomes
•
Evidence of successful middle or senior leadership experience in a school setting
•
Strong knowledge of curriculum and assessment frameworks
•
Excellent communication and organisational skills
•
Ability to inspire, challenge, and support staff and students alike
•
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
