Summary

About the role

At Balfour Beatty, we don’t just build projects - we deliver the infrastructure that powers communities, businesses, and entire industries. Our Power Transmission & Distribution team is shaping some of the most unprecedented and complex projects in the UK energy sector, and we’re looking for a Managing Quantity Surveyor who’s ready to match that ambition.

Building on the legacy of the Viking Link Interconnector, our HVDC portfolio is growing with Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) starting construction and the recent success on National Grid’s £59 billion High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Framework.

This isn’t a role for someone who wants to coast. We’re after a professional with sharp commercial acumen, fire in their belly, and the drive to get things done to the highest standard. You’ll be stepping into a high-performing team where the bar is set high, the pace is fast, and the rewards are real.

What you'll be doing

  • Leading the commercial delivery of major power sector projects, ensuring outcomes that are profitable, sustainable, and aligned with client expectations.
  • Driving commercial strategy, managing risk, and ensuring strong governance across complex contracts.
  • Coaching and developing your team, raising the standard at every level.
  • Building trusted relationships with clients, stakeholders, and partners through transparency, integrity, and delivery.
  • Provides commercial input to Value Engineering reviews for different forms of construction.
  • To support the review of tenders, including estimates, cost data and contract reviews.
  • Manage the preparation of the monthly CVR and associated commercial reports.
  • To be able to report and explain the commercial progress to senior project staff.
  • Establish client supply chain requirements & advise on alternative forms of contract & procurement arrangements.
  • Co-ordination of buying, accounts, production control/planning, supply chain management & procurement techniques, estimating & surveying functions.

Who we're looking for

  • A proven track record as a Managing QS (or a Senior QS ready to step up) with significant experience in large-scale infrastructure, energy, or power projects.
  • The full suite of professional QS skills and qualifications — but more importantly, the ability to apply them in real-world, high-pressure environments.
  • FIDIC contract experience desirable, but not essential.
  • A results-driven mindset: someone who thrives on challenges, makes clear decisions, and refuses to settle for “good enough.”
  • Track record of managing and developing a commercial team and be themselves a Chartered Member or Fellow of the RICS, ICES or CIOB, and a mentor/role model to other commercial staff on their journey to becoming professionally qualified.
  • Strong alignment with Balfour Beatty’s values — Lean, Expert, Trusted, Safe — and the ability to bring these to life daily in how you lead, deliver, and inspire others.

Why work for us

  • Competitive salary + company car options.
  • 25 days’ annual leave + bank holidays
  • Up to 7% employer pension contribution
  • Professional fees paid + chartership pathways
  • Smart working with up to 40% remote flexibility
  • Life assurance, EAP, and family-friendly policies
  • Volunteering opportunities to make a real impact
  • Access to industry-leading training and qualifications
