Summary
As Principal Optometrist within the Ophthalmology department, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality care across our glaucoma service, while also contributing to cataract and diabetic retinopathy pathways. This is a clinically advanced role requiring a high level of autonomy, decision-making, and leadership. Your key responsibilities will include: Delivering comprehensive optometric care across a broad range of services, including: Pre- and post-operative cataract assessments Visual assessments for patients with diabetic retinopathy Specialist glaucoma clinics involving complex case management and treatment planning Undertaking advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including (where qualified) laser treatments such as: YAG Capsulotomy Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) Peripheral Iridotomy (PI) Acting as the lead clinician in the assessment and ongoing management of patients with a wide range of ocular conditions, often involving complex comorbidities or communication needs. Formulating treatment plans, initiating or adjusting therapy independently, and making appropriate referrals or discharge decisions based on clinical need and service protocols. Communicating complex or sensitive information with empathy, including diagnoses, prognoses, and treatment options, particularly for patients with irreversible sight loss. Exercising excellent manual dexterity and precision in procedures such as slit-lamp examination, gonioscopy, contact lens fittings, and the interpretation of diagnostic imaging. Providing clinical supervision and mentorship to junior optometrists, students, and other members of the multidisciplinary team. Liaising closely with ophthalmologists, orthoptists, technicians, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless care pathways and effective service delivery.
