Summary
Senior Technician in Population Genomics
Cardiff School of Biosciences
We are seeking to appoint a Senior Technician to work within the School of Biosciences. The position is available for an externally funded project on coastal otters in Wales, using whole genome sequencing and population genomics analysis. The technician will work for the Cardiff University Otter Project, hosted in the Cardiff Molecular Ecology and Conservation laboratory.
The role will entail GPS mapping of data from the Cardiff University Otter Project, DNA extraction and quality control, followed by bioinformatic analysis of Illumina data, population genomic and phylogenomic analysis and assistance in preparation of a final project report, including preparation of figures and plotting using GPS tools. Further support in daily laboratory tasks and support of other ongoing research and student projects will be expected. Regular meetings and reporting via email to the PI, and interactions with the wider Molecular Ecology and Otter Project research groups are also expected.
For informal enquiries, please contact HailerF@cardiff.ac.uk
This post is full-time (35 hours per week), fixed term for four and a half months, and is available immediately.
The majority of roles at Cardiff University are currently operating under “blended working” arrangements, with staff having the flexibility to work partly from home and partly from the University campus depending on specific business requirements. Discussions around these arrangements can take place after the successful candidate has been appointed.
Secondment opportunity welcome - please note for Cardiff University members of staff interested in this post on a secondment basis, permission will need to be sought from your current Line Manager before applying.
Salary: £27,644 - £30,805 per annum (Grade 4). Please be aware that appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.
Cardiff University offers many excellent benefits, including 40 days annual leave (pro rata) (incl. bank holidays), local pension scheme, a cycle to work scheme and other travel initiatives, annual increments within the pay scale, and more. It's an exciting and vibrant place to work with many different challenges and is a proud Living Wage supporter. Business needs will require some degree of office-based working but the balance of time can be spent in the office or remotely (subject to agreement with the line manager).
Closing date: Tuesday, 09 September 2025
This post has previously been advertised to employees of Cardiff University only. We now invite external applications.
Cardiff University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity and to creating an inclusive working environment. We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of staff from many different backgrounds. In supporting our employees to achieve a balance between their work and their personal lives, we will also consider proposals for flexible working or job share arrangements.
Applications may be submitted in Welsh, and an application submitted in Welsh will not be treated less favourably than an application submitted in English.
