KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Clinical Work - Obstetrics BWH is the tertiary obstetric centre for the West Midlands. It has approximately 7500 deliveries a year with extensive Foetal and Maternal Medicine departments including the regional GUCH service in addition to dedicated Renal, Rheumatology, Diabetes, Endocrine, Haematology, Cardiac, Gastrointestinal & Neurology clinics with input from relevant UHB specialists and maternal medicine obstetricians. There are Liver, Cardiac, Haematology, Renal and Respiratory MDTs. The Maternal Medicine team also have close links with regional Oncology, Immunology and Dermatology clinicians. We have been commissioned to deliver the anaesthetic aspect of the regional maternal medicine service, and are unique in having job planned time for regional MDT. BWH has 2 obstetric theatres and run all day elective obstetric lists Monday to Friday. Daily there are two consultant anaesthetists supported by a team of post IACOA resident doctors. One consultant leads the elective work with the other covering delivery suite. There is a 4 bedded maternal enhanced care unit for the care of complicated or seriously ill mothers on the delivery suite to which over 400 mothers are admitted per year. Advice or transfer for level 3 care is provided by the Intensive Care team at QEHB. Also at BWH there are 2 Gynaecology theatres with all day gynaecology elective lists Monday -- Friday and 1 fertility theatre with half day assisted conception lists Monday/ Wednesday/ Friday. Consultants on the Obstetric On-call rota provide non-resident cover for emergency obstetrics and gynaecology supported by 2 resident doctors. There is predictable on-call time in the job plan for the obstetric follow up ward round at weekends. Teaching & Training The successful applicant would be expected to have an active interest in teaching. Our registrar anaesthetic training has been adapted to reflect the new RCOA Anaesthesia curriculum. We have recently invited applications for trainees wishing to pursue a CESR pathway. Training is coordinated by the specialty education leads but involves informal and formal teaching by all consultants. There is also a departmental programme of teaching mapped to RCOA examination requirements which is co-ordinated by the junior anaesthetic staff with support from consultants. At BWH we receive Birmingham School of Anaesthesia resident doctors undergoing their IACOA, stage 1, 2 and 3 training. In addition resident doctors from across the West Midlands chose BWH for their Obstetric SIA. BWH recently opened a state of the art Women's Health and Neonatal simulation suite which enhances our anaesthetic and MDT training. UHB has an obligation to teach medical students and a commitment to the Birmingham and Warwickshire School's of Anaesthesia. Involvement in structured teaching and lecturing to both these groups will be expected. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply for the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer in the University department of Medical Sciences.
