An exciting fixed term role or a secondment development opportunity has arisen for a highly experienced, suitably qualified HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic workforce as an Advanced Senior BMS within the Transfusion Laboratories of Blood Sciences at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories.

The Haematology Department operates 24-hour service and well equipped with modern automation and processes almost 2 million samples per annum, providing the highest quality patient centred service across four separate hospital sites.

The department is UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accredited and accredited by the HCPC/IBMS as a training laboratory for the Certificate of Competency and the Specialist and Generic Portfolios.

The post holder will contribute as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, delivering high-quality, cost-effective clinical and laboratory services in line with departmental objectives.

They will have extensive knowledge of Transfusion procedures and experience in staff supervision and management. Responsibilities include training and assessing scientific and clinical staff, handling HR tasks, and supporting the Laboratory Manager with data collection, stock, and quality management.

They will lead daily operations, prioritise tasks, and manage a challenging workload.

The role involves writing SOPs, maintaining quality assurance, and supporting service development.

The post holder will also be involved in HR responsibilities and ensuring compliance with standards like UKAS ISO 15189:2022.

The role requires core hours work, with participation in the out-of-hours rota.

Overview of the role –

Facilitate the provision of the clinical technical services of the Transfusion laboratory by supervising and instructing staff and maintaining resources.

Supervise staff, organise and prioritise workload to meet demanding deadlines.

Communicate to the Transfusion Laboratory Manager such information as is required to maintain the continuing provision of the services.

Manage, communicate and assist the Laboratory Managers with personnel or personnel related problems.

Deputise for the Transfusion Laboratory Manager in their absence.

Undertake training of scientific and support staff.

Authorise and issue compatible blood components and pharmaceutical products.

Facilitate the keeping of adequate stocks of blood, blood product therapeutic materials and pharmaceuticals under rigorously controlled temperature environments, as appropriate for each component/product, to ensure patient safety.

Assist in the production of all Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory analyses, use of equipment, care of the working environment across all Department sites

Arrange and monitor annual maintenance contracts for laboratory equipment, standing orders and consumables including all sites where appropriate.
