Summary

This role is predominantly based at our Highfield Campus, working as part of the University’s IT Outreach Team — a highly visible and varied area of our IT Support Service. It’s a fast-paced environment where you’ll need to balance in-person support with your wider ticket workload, proactive outreach activities, and project tasks.

You’ll work face-to-face with staff, students, and other University stakeholders, assisting with everything from device configuration and software setup to account access and hardware diagnostics.

While your main base will be Highfield, you may be asked to support outreach activities at other campuses to meet demand. This is a practical, customer-facing role where great communication skills, a positive attitude, and a proactive approach are just as important as your technical ability.

What you’ll do

Respond to in-person and remote support requests for a wide range of IT issues
Build and configure devices for staff and student use (including hardware upgrades and reimaging)
Provide friendly, jargon-free advice to users on University systems, services, and best practices
Support device deployments, repairs, and general troubleshooting
Contribute to shared documentation and knowledge, helping others learn from your experience
What you’ll bring

Experience in an IT support environment (professional or voluntary), with basic troubleshooting skills
Familiarity with Windows operating systems, and ideally some exposure to macOS or Linux
A calm, methodical approach to resolving problems, even when under pressure
Strong communication skills and a clear, approachable manner when working with customers.
A willingness to learn, ask questions, and take on new challenges
A collaborative mindset, you’re happy working independently or as part of a wider team
Flexibility to work across different locations and support users with a variety of needs
The University of Southampton is a global top 100 university, delivering world-class research and education. Our IT service, iSolutions, plays a vital role in enabling this — supporting everything from hybrid teaching to specialist computing environments.

You’ll be joining a friendly, supportive team that’s passionate about delivering excellent service and always looking for ways to improve. We encourage curiosity, collaboration, and continual learning at every level.

We offer a healthy work-life balance, a defined benefit pension scheme, and a generous holiday allowance (20+ days), as well as enhanced parental leave and access to staff wellbeing support.
