Job Title: Year Group Teaching Assistant – Year 5

Responsible to: Year Group Leader

Contract: 31 hours

Job Purpose

To support the learning and development of pupils in Year 5, working under the direction of the class teacher and year group leader. The postholder will help to ensure that all pupils make progress academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the teaching and learning of individuals, small groups, and whole class activities under the direction of the class teacher.
• Deliver targeted interventions in literacy, numeracy, and other curriculum areas to raise attainment.
• Provide feedback to teachers and contribute to the assessment of pupils’ progress.
• Support pupils with additional needs (including SEND, EAL, or emotional/social needs) to access the curriculum effectively.
• Promote positive behaviour and support the school’s behaviour policy.
• Prepare and organise resources to support learning activities.
• Supervise pupils during playtimes, lunchtimes, trips, and other activities as required.
• Establish positive, supportive relationships with children, colleagues, and parents/carers.
• Contribute to the wider life of the school and year group team.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Previous experience of working with children in a school or educational setting.
• Experience of delivering small group or 1:1 interventions (e.g. reading, phonics, maths support).
• Ability to build positive relationships with pupils and support them in achieving their potential.
• Good literacy and numeracy skills.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a team.
• Understanding of safeguarding and the responsibility to promote the welfare of children.
• Excellent IT skills

Desirable:

• A degree or equivalent qualification.
• Experience of supporting children in Key Stage 2, particularly Year 5.
• Knowledge of effective strategies for supporting children with More Able, SEND or EAL.
• First Aid training.
• Ability to lead a class for short-term cover.
• Familiarity with assessment tools and progress tracking systems.

The post will be temporary for one year.
