Summary

We are looking for a LED Doctor ST3+ to join our busy surgical department.

We have a large throughput of elective and emergency cases, approximately 10-15 cases are admitted as emergencies per day, but twice the number may be reviewed without admission in the surgical admissions unit. Outpatient and operating sessions are held at Blackpool Victoria Hospital but also in peripheral hospitals at Fleetwood.

There are 4 General Surgery wards and 1 Urology ward. All emergency patients are admitted directly to the admissions unit.

Surgical trainees/equivalents work a system of full shifts which reflects the work intensity of the department. (The department also employs Advanced Practitioners to support Junior Medical Staff and alleviate inappropriate duties).

a) Provision of in-patient care for Consultant’s patients.

b) Attendance at Department Audit Meetings (1 per month)

c) Attendance at out-patient clinics (2 per week)

d) Attendance at Theatre sessions every week.

e) Participation in emergency on call - 1 in 9 weeks.

f) Discharge summaries and follow-up clinic letters as directed.

g) Attendance at formal Surgical Teaching (1 session per week).

h) Other duties as directed by the Head of Department

i) Support the development of the new Enhanced Surgical Area

Blackpool Victoria Hospital, or BVH, as it is known locally, is a medium sized NHS district general hospital (DGH), and comprises the major element of secondary health care within the wider combined acute and community trust that is the “Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust”. The Hospital itself has around 900 beds and these provide care for Acute Medicine in its wider terms and DGH Surgical specialities, including amongst others General Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Urology and Gynaecology. There is a Women and Children’s unit including both Consultant lead and Midwife lead maternity care.
