The Open Space Officer is part of West Lothian Council’s Nets, Land and Countryside service. The successful candidate will facilitate projects to repair and improve council play assets including play areas, ball courts, skate parks, and outdoor gyms. The role will be responsible for all aspects of project delivery i.e. community consultation, design, procurement, and overseeing construction. The post holder will also facilitate all routine ongoing maintenance of play assets in partnership with a team of four inspectors and a number of approved contractors.


The postholder will also be responsible for investigating and responding to public enquiries and complaints, including dealing directly with the public where the council has failed to provide an acceptable level of service.


Applicants should ideally possess the following. However, applications that do not meet these essential criteria may be considered i.e. if required to appoint candidate.



  • HND in an environmental/land-based subject. Alternatively, must have significant experience and knowledge of open space or play area management

  • Ability to contribute to strategic direction and implementation

  • Experience of dealing with the public

  • Proven organisational skills and experience

  • Up to date knowledge of applicable computer packages

  • Experience of delivering landscape related projects in the private or public sector.

This is a circa. 12-month fixed term post. The post is contracted to 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday. This role requires the postholder to be primarily office based, and includes extensive travel throughout West Lothian. Flexible working hours are available within parameters of the policy for West Lothian Council.


Salary £39,661.86 to £43,434.71.
