Summary

2-Year Postdoctoral Position in Frontiers of Ocean and Planetary Science

University of Southampton (Schools of Ocean & Earth Science / Physics & Astronomy)

Start Date: Early 2026 (flexible)

The University of Southampton invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher to join a newly formed collaboration between Prof. Alberto Naveira Garabato, Dr. Alessandro Silvano and Dr. João M. Mendonça. You will investigate ocean and sea-ice dynamics on Earth and the icy moons of our Solar System, using the state-of-the-art Oceananigans model. Over the two-year appointment (1 + 1), you will also co-develop a next-generation ocean component for integration into the universal climate model OASIS.

We are looking for a candidate with a PhD (or equivalent) in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric or Planetary Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field, completed by the start of the appointment. You should have strong scientific programming skills (Julia, Python, Fortran or C++) and hands-on experience with ocean or sea-ice modelling. Excellent communication, a collaborative spirit and a passion for interdisciplinary research are essential.

To apply, please submit your CV, a brief cover letter outlining your relevant background and research interests (max 2 pages), and contact details for two referees via the University’s online recruitment portal. Informal enquiries are welcome—please contact Prof. Naveira Garabato (acng@soton.ac.uk), Dr. Silvano (A.Silvano@soton.ac.uk) or Dr. Mendonça (j.mendonca@soton.ac.uk). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the post is filled.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants who support our mission of inclusivity.

Apply by 11.59 pm GMT on the closing date. For assistance contact Recruitment on +44(0)2380 592750 or recruitment@soton.ac.uk quoting the job number.
