Summary

Collects, using venepuncture procedures, blood samples from adult patients in a variety of settings, and receive training in Paediatric phlebotomy aged 10-16 years, selecting the appropriate equipment for the procedure. Monitors and maintains the health, safety and security of self and patients during the venepuncture procedure. Practices within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trust procedures, and is aware of potential hazards. Collects samples from patients in high risk categories and is aware of potential hazards. Is able to follow agreed protocols to minimise risk to self and others. Is aware of the clinical conditions and precautions that are necessary for sample quality to be maintained during the venepuncture procedure, and develops an awareness of requirements for site selection, correct use of tourniquet and selection of blood sample bottles. Ensures that blood sample bottles are accurately labelled in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Ensures that clinical samples are correctly packaged for transportation to the laboratory in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Pathology Department. Develops proficiency in the use, maintenance and quality control procedures of the departmental equipment. Works to ensure that departmental performance targets are met by continually assessing priority of work, taking into account individual needs of the patient. Seeks guidance from experienced Phlebotomists as necessary. Is aware of, and works to relevant departmental policies and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring that personal performance complies with ISO (International standards organisation). Performs telephone duties that include making and receiving calls from and to the phlebotomy unit, dealing with simple enquiries and refer more complex enquiries to a senior member of staff. Works to achieve competencies across the repertoire of the department as appropriate. Participates in the Trust Personal Development programme and works towards identified development needs. To include attendance on mandatory training courses and subsequent updates in line with Trust Policy. Communicates effectively with other staff groups both internal and external. To include healthcare professionals, transport, portering services, patients and their representatives at an appropriate level and knows when to seek advice. . Provides and receives sensitive information from patients and their representatives where empathic skills are required. Includes communication with difficult patients who may have barriers to understanding. Is able to present information accordingly. Performs administrative tasks, to include activity audits and other audits as required. Ensures efficient use of resources and is aware of stock levels and rotation, storage conditions, batch numbers and expiry dates, thus ensuring the viability of stock used. Ensures appropriate stock levels are maintained in own area of operation. Maintains a clean and safe working environment through good housekeeping practices. This will include disposal of clinical waste, decontamination processes. Is aware of Clinical Governance, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and local Health and Safety policies, reporting problems, errors or breaches to the senior staff.
