Summary
At present, the Department functions as four Consultant teams supported by five Middle Grade doctors. Mr Ziad Haddad provides a general orthopaedic service and has an interest in foot and ankle surgery and paediatrics. Mr Colin Dunlop provides a general orthopaedic service with a special interest in Hip and Knee surgery. Mr Patrick Armstrong - Clinical Lead provides an upper limb service with a specialist Hand service provided by a visiting consultant. This post is the fourth post. Mr Simon West is the Medical Director and contributes to the Lower limb service on a part-time basis. Our Spinal service is currently under review and the ultimate model is yet to be finalised, it is currently supported by a visiting team from Taunton. The Department provides a wide spectrum of orthopaedic and trauma surgical services. Elective surgical services include: Joint replacement, including revision Upper limb surgery, including specialist hand, wrist and shoulder surgery Lower limb surgery including foot and ankle and arthroscopic knee surgery Sports injury surgery Spinal surgery Primary bone tumours and scoliosis patients are referred to specialist centres on the UK Mainland.An out patient elective paediatric orthopaedic service is provided in Jersey but children requiring surgery are referred to both the Paediatric Orthopaedic Service in Southampton and Great Ormond Street Hospital. The musculoskeletal trauma service is varied and while we try to provide as comprehensive a service as possible we do transfer complex fractures and polytrauma to mainland centres when necessary. The Department is currently responsible for the immediate management of head injuries, chest injuries and burns to the limbs. Patients requiring emergency neurosurgical intervention or cardiothoracic intervention are transferred to Southampton. Burns are transferred to Salisbury. All the visiting orthopaedic surgeons provide a tertiary specialist service for complex clinical problems. Within the Hospital, there is a daily trauma meeting and on Fridays, a weekly MDT. A named Middle Grade for each team carries responsibility for continuity of care of the patients under their team. Daily fracture clinics are held during the week to review acute injuries. The main Operating Theatre Department comprises five operating theatres, one of which is reserved as an emergency theatre in which the Trauma List takes place each day. There is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit. A minor operating suite is also available. Jersey has a 7 bed Intensive Care Unit which is also used as a Surgical High Dependency Unit. This unit is managed on a day-to-day basis by the Anaesthetic Department led by three Consultant Anaesthetists with a special interest in intensive care. CT scanning is available including a 24 hour on call emergency service including the Consultant Radiologist on call. MRI scanning is available during the day but an out of hours service is currently not available.
