Summary
This post leads on education and development of the NELFT newly registered and undergraduate OT workforce including apprentices and students linked to the University of East London.
The role provides a bridge between the world of academic learning with partners at the University of East London and AHP practice education and development in NELFT. This represents a great opportunity for a clinician who is passionate about the education pillar and ready to support others to expand their practice-based knowledge and skills.
The role is aimed at ensuring OT learners and newly registered practitioners have high quality development and well-defined career progression pathways in NELFT supporting retention and career stage growth aligned to the organisational values.
• To work across NELFT and UEL to grow practice education placements within NELFT for occupational therapy and other AHP students and apprentices.
• To support supply of registered occupational therapists from apprentice, student and returnees to practice pipelines.
• To provide OT teaching and clinical education to designated cohorts of NELFT occupational therapists and UEL students and apprentices.
• To oversee, facilitate and deliver a newly registered OT education and development programme on a rolling regular basis in NELFT.
• To provide an OT training and induction programme for internationally educated occupational therapists.
• To provide in-reach lecturing support to UEL occupational therapy and other Allied health professional programmes addressing areas of shared learning.
• To undertake learning needs analysis for designated cohorts of occupational therapists in NELFT and report and respond to these with the relevant leads within NELFT AHP, NELFT training and development and UEL.
• To promote excellent patient outcomes and experience, as well as retention of occupational therapists by developing and maintaining access to a comprehensive range of Occupational therapy post graduate learning and development both in-house and via UEL partnership.
• To provide specialist advice, teaching and training to Occupational therapists in NELFT.
Starting with NELFT
NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will includemandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focussing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.
Probationary Period
This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).
High Cost Area Supplement
This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,714 to a maximum of £5,941 p.a pro rata for part time).

Clinical Skills
• To role model and promote best practice in occupational therapy to registered and student/apprentice occupational therapists across NELFT.
• To Influence and support the implementation of evidence based clinical practice through advising clinical services on national and local guidance or supporting the development thereof.
• To facilitate supervised practice and support assigned cohorts of occupational therapy staff undertaking clinical skills as per training and competency requirements.
Leadership
• Provide clinical practice-based education and training as required to defined cohorts of Occupational therapy and other Allied health staff both in NELFT and at UEL . Occasional 1:1 education or practice-based support will be required.
• Represent NELFT within UEL providing a conduit of information between organisations.
• To undertake suitable training to achieve teaching qualification with UEL.
• Participate in the regular supervision and appraisal within NELFT and in partnership with UEL around the core requirements of the post.
• Be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development plan to meet set objectives and competencies.
• To provide support for AHP students and educators within NELFT escalating any concerns within NELFT or UEL.
• To provide support for staff and supervisors where there are clinical training gaps.
Professional Ethics
• Comply with own Professional Body Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and HCPC standards for registration.
• Adhere to NELFT and UEL policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Adhere to all relevant local policies and guidelines.
• Proactively align AHP/OT education and training in-put to Trust values.
• Demonstrate the ability to reflect on ethical issues and to provide guidance to AHP staff as necessary.
Administration
• Work effectively with data systems across NELFT and UEL.
• To maintain, interpret and present accurate and timely statistics and information as required within the required timescales.
• To use Trust/University electronic systems and platforms to fulfil the requirements of the role and access and input data.
• To maintain accurate records of activity and contribute input into trust information systems in a timely manner as directed e.g. STEPS.
• Advanced digital skills in MS teams and similar to enable the sharing and presenting of information, chairing virtual meetings
• Utilising a wide range of presentation and engagement tools
• Ability to utilise all Microsoft Office applications to record and share data including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• To adapt and engage with external IT systems including those operated by HEIs to support recording of student learning
Communication
• To use effective communication including verbal and non-verbal skills including teaching, negotiation and persuasion skills to provide education advice and direct training within role in NELFT and UEL.
• To provide regular verbal and written reports on all aspects of the role and its associated outputs and outcomes.
• To initiate and maintain contacts with local and national clinical interest groups appropriate to aspects of practice education undertaken, and to disseminate and share information as appropriate.
• To engage effectively with Trust-wide AHP colleagues, and to sustain effective working partnerships across internal and external stakeholder involved in supporting the education and training associated with the post.
• Able to demonstrate knowledge of different learning styes and adaptable teaching styles to meet education and training needs.
• Devising written teaching programmes and session content.
• Delivery of face to face and web-based training and education sessions.
• Coaching and mentoring skills.
Training
• Contribute to the development and retention of OT staff.
• Enhance access to practice education for UEL physiotherapy, podiatry and occupational therapy students and apprentices in NELFT.
• Address unmet training and education needs for occupational therapists and other AHP students and apprentices.
• To lead on changes in practice, in conjunction with NELFT clinical leads.
• To actively support relevant research projects and ideas within NELFT/UEL.
• To provide professional and career guidance to OT staff and support through rotations, advise on continual professional development and provide practice-based mentoring and coaching.
• To take a lead role in the planning and organisation of Occupational therapy teaching sessions within NELFT and at UEL.
• To ensure that the agreed quality standards of service, based on professional guidelines and standards from the HCPC, relevant professional bodies and national guidelines are maintained in the context of the role.
Service Development and Delivery
• To consolidate the partnership between NELFT and UEL in providing undergraduate and post graduate education and training for occupational therapists and other designate cohorts of AHP staff.
Professional Development
• Maintain and update a CPD portfolio.
